Real Depression and "emo" difference? (13)

Okay so I'm 20, i live a decently normal life, nothing strange, daddy didn't touch me. mommy never hit me. Just normal middle class. But I'm a very depressed person, I've though of suicide and have a habit of cutting sometimes, I just get lonely, very much so, I have friends I get out, I've had a gf, I have a job, but at night when i'm alone, I'm lonely and depressed.

I feel afraid to talk to people about it or express how sad I get because people are made fun of so much for being "emo" I don't want to be stuck in a catigory with people who are sad at hair in their eyes and screaming music, I'm not an emo, I'm just depressed.

What can I do? I can't get help for fear of letting people know how depressed i really AM.

I just don't know what to do.

Why do you feel depressed? Have something happened to you? Or something changed in your life?

Look for the reason, if you can't find one, try to do something interesting when you feel lonely or depressed.

well I've been kind if sickly since i was young. always didn't feel good, stomach kills me. Doctors have found E-coli and a hiatal hernia (stomach one) and yet still I have pain. I just have a depressing out look on life. I feel like every day I'll be lucky if I live through it and never PLAN on doing so.

I don't know if physical pain will lead to the kind of emotional pain I have, but i know it doesn't help, makes it harder for me to get out more and find things to be happy about. Meh.

Physical pain can affect your mental state, but I think that not that much. So must be some other thing that is making you feel that way.

Do you feel depressed and lonely only at night or when you are with other people too?

even when i'm with other people my outlook on life isn't too great, but i tend to be more depressed when I'm alone at night.

I get depressed when I have to go to work (like right now) but I think every working person does THAT =P

Clinical depression is a medical issue, that could involve a seratonin inbalance in the brain. You might consider talking to a doctor, they should be able to diagnose you if it's clinical depression, in which case, welcome to the world of Prozac.

Oh, gee, that really does sound depressing.

Try to be honest and look out what really doesn't please you in your life... There must be something. Even if it's the very fact that you don't have any problems and that everything is more or less ok in your life... The lack of significant events might be a source of depression too.
If you feel lonely, then maybe you don't have the feeling of being with people and communicating. (I don't know) Do you have some close friends or several but only acquaintances ?
Also, did you choose your job ? Have you renounced to some dreams ?... Plenty of questions you can ask yourself...
I think that if you don't feel ok, then there's at least ONE thing for sure : you have the idea of something, and you don't have it or you don't feel you're going to have it.

The age right after high school is tough for a lot of people, even if they don't have any particular reason to be depressed. But it's a serious thing, and if you've really been thinking about suicide and things like that, I agree that you should see a doctor about it. If you aren't having any life problems it just might be a chemical imbalance.

The best way to beat depression is cognitive therapy and drugs. If you're depressed just because for substantial periods of time, this is really the only solution.

Also, depressed people tend not to do anything about their condition due to the whole lethargy and circular defeatist logic they have going. Unless you want to spend the rest of your life feeling like shit and making everyone else around you feel like shit (until they leave permanently), get treatment immediately.

PS. I've seen a couple people who made the mistake of not seeking treatment. They're both now in retirement, and their personal lives and histories are a shambles. They're going to die alone.
