A domestic disturbance (6)

Not more than fifteen minutes ago, I had to call the police because there was something going on in my neighbor's house. It sounded like she and her boyfriend were arguing, then I heard someone get hit and she was screaming. Then I heard stuff getting knocked over, like a lamp or something.

I guess I don't need advice so much as I need comforting. What scares me is that I've been raised in a city where you aren't supposed to talk to the police no matter what, even if there's a murder. If you do, you're a snitch and if you're a snitch, people will go after you.

I mean, what's to stop the guy from coming after me now that the cops have come and gone? He knows I live next door because I had to come out and point out the house since I didn't know the address. I hate the idea of being a nosy neighbor or a snitch, but after the fight there was silence and I heard the boyfriend exit the house, so I was afraid she was really hurt.

I'm still shaking a little because I was afraid the police would come too late. I'm the kind of guy who believes that if someone is in trouble, it's worth putting yourself in danger, so I was afraid I might actually have to go out and help. My father was in the military and after that a police officer, so I guess you can tell that I've been raised in an at least semi-sheltered household and was raised to believe a lot of naive stuff.

Anyway, that's what happened. Did I do the right thing or should I have kept my mouth shut so I don't get my family into any trouble?

I believe your decision was somehow altruistic. Life isn't as simple as right or wrong and you might not have had the time to measure the consequences of it, but If you were able to prevent a serious crime or make the chick realise that she needs to get away from that bastard then it was good. I hope you'll be fine.

BTW, what country is that? (you don't have to answer the question if you don't want to)

good on you for calling the police. i disapprove of 'snitching' entirely, but it's different if someone might be in real trouble. imagine how you'd have felt if you'd been a coward and not called them cos you were scared and then later found outshe'd died or something? the people in your city sound stupid...in some situations, calling the police is the right thing to do.

I'm in the United States.

Thanks for your support. I just hope I wasn't wrong and caused them unnecessary trouble. DX That would be a bit of a problem.

you did a good job at calling the police, people are idiots on not realizing themselves being in an abusive relationship and the consequences becomes worse and worse. By taking the initiative you might have saved a life.

Great job :)
