Alcoholism - ask questions, share experiences (22)

So I'm in my last week of stationary therapy and am going home soon. It was very helpful for me and even though I know that there will be some tough times ahead, I think I can make it and stay clean for the next few years. It's not my plan to have a relapse some time but one never knows. For now it's my plan to accomblish a lot in my new job (had to quit my studies before therapy because of alcohol) in the next few years and lead a much more active life and not just watch anime and browse boards. I've rediscovered some old hobbies of mine and that alone will help me a lot in fighting my addiction.

So I guess this is a thread to share experiences with alcoholism or any other addiction and to ask questions for people who think they might have a similar problem, know someone with an addiction or are simply interested in the subject.

Right, but years of drinking 1/2 - 1 bottle of vodka per day almost every day is another matter.

I'm interested in the subject,... Did you figure out the sequence of events in your daily routine that lead you to the drink? Have you sufficiently altered your habits to avoid that?

How do you plan to prevent loneliness to cause you to plunge again?

Do you intend to be a strict no-alcohol drinker, or just be moderate on your consumption?

You can do it, OP!

a serious question, do you think this AA shit about accepting a higher power and never drinking again are the best approach?

to me it sounds like bullshit having to admit defeat, that you can never be normal or just enjoy a nice drink like a normal person.

Total severence from alcohol is not connected to accepting an higher power,...

Some people are excessively sensitive to alcohol, and absolutely must avoid drinking even occasionnally, because their body just can't take it like most people.

That has nothing to do with admiting defeat, it's a physiological problem. A blind person won't see light, no matter how long she will not "admit defeat"

I'm an alcoholic, and I hate AA with a passion. I am by nature a very quiet person and an atheist to boot, so them bothering me constantly about god and trying to get me to give them my phone number annoys the shit out of me. The only problem is, when I don't go for a while, I relapse. :(

I believe there are non-sectarian alternatives for the AA.

Actually, alcohol, in any quantity, is harmful to your body. If you are going to quit it, quit it completely, because there is no real reason to drink alcohol.

Everything is harmful to your body: stress, sunlight, television, food, friction, sharp pointy objects...

Abstaining from alcohol completely might save you some hangovers, but could hurt your social life.

Right on 14, I don't understand why people don't enjoy life's pleasures..no they work out TOO much, diet, etc etc...And BOOM suddenly you have cancer, or a car accident or something else..so you suffered for nothing. Who the hell wants to live forever anyways..enjoy the time you are given people!

What you need to understand, is that a person's sensitivity to alcohol varies a lot, from one individual to another.

For someone, having a drink is nothing special, a treat that is quickly forgotten, and you think about something else.

For other people, among them alcoholics, a drink is extremely toxic. Their body will be extremely affected by it, with intense craving for another drink.

These people do not react like others to alcohol, and so they must avoid it at all costs. Sometimes it takes them decades, to figure it out,...

Right, but some people get addicted to television or food too, so it's really not all that different from any other kind of addiction which is bad for you.

So, can tv kill you?

>>14-15 An alcohol addiction is certainly not something that can be shrugged off so easily. You don't normally see support groups for people with an addiction to television, food, or anything else of the sort, do you? Alcohol has a tendency to ruin people's lives, either by causing a car accident, making the person violent, causing the person to be lazy (Thus losing jobs, relationships). I believe I read somewhere that alcohol plays a part in 1/3 of violent crimes and homicides.

It's true, you only have one life. So why would you allow that life to waste away? Your life should be lived to the fullest; You should become the best person you can be, and live as long as possible.

I'm cheering you on, OP! You don't need alcohol! You've been given a chance; you're sober as of this moment. Don't waste this opportunity to become a wonderful person!

It can damage your psychology and social life enough that the physical harm follows quickly.

Any addiction can kill you. Even if not directly.
