i've been opposed to smoking all my life practically. lately though i've really been wanting to do it, even though i am fully aware that it will do nothing but steal my money and rape my lungs/other organs. obviously it i stupid, and i am a pretty logical person i would say, but i really want to smoke. it's not peer pressure, it's completely a mental struggle.

could anyone venture as to why i all of the sudden want to slowly kill myself? it's so mind-numbingly retarded even to think about. there is no point to it, yet i am faced with this bullshit urge. soon i'll totally be able to bullshit rationalize myself into smoking, then use addiction as an excuse. please, i need some advice...

Why do you NEED to smoke? Not want (you've already explained/bullshit rationalized), need.

I've never felt the need to smoke. It seems pretty pointless, but I know that you can't give it up that easily once you've built up that addiction.

You're going to have a hard time. Remember that it's not just mental, it's chemical too.

Take the tablets, gum, patches, whatever to soothe the chemical side of it.

Educate yourself for the mental side: read studies, read up on what you're actually smoking, study the poisons, check out the photos of people (living and dead) that have spent their lives smoking.

And physically: don't buy them. Save up your cigg money for DVDs, a sweet laptop, porn.

Sorry if these are stupid answers, because I don't even smoke, or have ever had an addiction like that.

I didn't start smoking until I was around 29 or so. I started off with cigars, then bought a pipe. Lately I've taken to smoking "little cigars" which look exactly like cigarettes but have cigar tobacco in them.

Why? I tried it just to see and found that I liked it.

Why not? I don't do it often, I don't inhale any smoke and I don't spend a lot of money on it. Seriously, I spend less than seven dollars every two weeks. Just smoking a pipe I can make $4 last more than a month, and still smoke really good tobacco.

The tobacco I smoke has smooth pleasant flavors, and after eating a nice meal or having a few good drinks, a little puff is a great way to cap it off.

Plus it pisses off whiny faggots. I used to keep a big, obnoxious cigar on me just for smoking in bars when the people next to me started getting on my nerves. Good stuff.

Chew gums. Anyway, that's what you'll do when you will be trying to quit from smoking, a few years down the lane,...

The best way to avoid an urge is to identify what circumstances lead to that urge, and modify them, or replace that urge with a replacement behavior (like chewing gums)

I've been smoking cigarettes since I was 16 (I am 20 now) and I wouldn't suggest starting it. I also wouldn't suggest cigars or pipe because that just casues mouth and stomach cancer. Smoking is just smelly and unattractive. I only attract girls who smoke also or just don't mind my smoking. Overall, it smells bad to people who don't smoke and just slowly kills you. I would quit but I find myself too cool to quit. Smoking is cool but don't do it!

I think you feel bad about something, consciously or not, and try to find a "socially accepted" way to slowly self-destruct yourself. Like, you're not going to cut yourself because it's dumb, but smoking... oh yeah.

That said, you can smoke just for the fun of it. I have a sheesha (spelling?), and get cigs from times to times from friends when we're around a drink. Actually, it's good over a few beers. Pipe is second to the best, as >>3 said, because you can carry it, but nothing's like sharing a sheesha with some friends.

So, ask yourself: do you want to smoke casually, because, well, it looks like it's great; or do you want to take on the habit of smoking?

One is temptation, the other, self-destruction.

I had the same problem as you OP, I got massive urges to smoke, even though I had never smoked in my life. When I felt like smoking, I would just decide not to. Your weak will kinda' sickens me OP, either man up and deal with your shit, or start smoking 4 packs a day and enjoy your cancer.

If you can't quit on your own, despite the negative consequences on your life, then you're addicted.

There are help groups (like 12-step) that will help, and there are also products like nicotine gum that can help.

There's a chance you'll transfer the addiction from cigarettes to nicotine gum. If that happens, at least your lungs are OK.

Social smoking = great, really
Smoking as an habit = not so great
Smoking as an addiction (ie. I have a friend that can't sleep without smoking some weed = sad

Weed is thoroughly boring to me, plus the smoke fucks with my asthma.

It seems to be okay to vaporise things though, as long as it's in small amounts. Have never smoked crack though. Kind of want to, but not enough to actually go looking.
