Making fun of my patients. (65)

1 Name: Anonymous : 2008-02-11 21:40 ID:DkSXI2zy

I work as a psychologist. As most do, I record conversations. I like to play them back for my friends, fellow psychologists (and they play theirs), etc. No harm in it right? I'm in my office one day, and I'm with a few of my colleagues and some friends. We're listening to a tape from a guy who was molested by his dad as a kid. We're all laughing and hollering, having a good time. I completely forgot I had a appointment with this same person right at the same time. He walks in, and catches me playing thet tapes for everybody. He runs out, looking like he was about to bawl, before I could explain. Now I might be done. If word gets out from him I could lose my other clients, my job, and my prestige. What do I do? How should I make it up to this guy, or get him not to talk?

2 Name: Anonymous : 2008-02-11 21:47 ID:oG46cvG8

Tell him you were worried by his case for some reason, and wanted confirmation from your fellow psychologist friends. Then procced to reassure him by saying you all thought it was nothing in the end.

If you were only with psychologists, that could work.

Also I hope you weren't all laughing to tears when he walked in. Otherwise, you'll probably have to lie even more like "one of my friends told us a joke at the wrong moment, and it made us laugh, I'm sorry you happened to walk in at this very moment".

That said, I think you deserved it.

Actually we were laughing, drinking, and eating pizza. And making plenty of jokes about him, which I'm sure he heard. And there were many non-psychologist people there, and I imagine he could tell some of them didn't look very professional.

It's hard not to believe that you're a troll. If you're not a troll, then you're retarded,...

If so, don't worry, your (ex)patient will be so traumatised with the whole thing that he'll never speak about it. So just take it as a lesson and move on.

Between laughing to it and telling to your friends, and playing back recordings for them is a huge gap. And you've crossed it swiftly.

So? It's not wrong, don't be a dick.

17 Name: Anonymous : 2008-02-12 18:41 ID:3Akn6PqX

if it's not wrong, then why are there things such as patient confidentiality? oh yeah, so that these matters would be kept private between patient and doctor. with that being said, this has to be a troll just because the way OP presented him/herself in this situation is very unprofessional-like, especially for a doctor

18 Name: Anonymous : 2008-02-12 19:44 ID:DkSXI2zy

>>17

Hey, I hate to tell you, but your doctors aren't "professionals". I work with these people, and trust me. If you go to their office to see them their professional, but once you step out the door, all of that pleasantry goes away.

19 Name: Anonymous : 2008-02-12 21:41 ID:pdwXeptE

>>18
Not necessarily. I work in the same field as you do, but I'd never break doctor-patient confidentiality; if only because I'd expect the same courtesy when visiting a doctor myself. You don't take your own work seriously, and that is the terrible thing in this thread. You're in your career to help people who need outside help, not to entertain yourself or your colleagues. I don't care if people treat you 'like a robot,' you CHOSE this field and should have forseen the difficulties. Your patients didn't CHOOSE to have psychological problems; in fact, it's laudable that they're seeking help for them. Man up and accept what you picked for yourself in your life, or find another career. Being unhappy with your job is not reason enough to treat your patients like shit and trample over them.

It just sickens me that I work in the same field as unprofessional dickwards like you. Then again, you're probably a troll. Years of medical school and yet you've confused 'their' and 'they're'?

20 Name: Anonymous : 2008-02-12 22:10 ID:DkSXI2zy

>>19

Well, I'm a doctor not a grammarian. And I'm writing on an internet forum, not my doctorate thesis. You and I have different opinions on proper pyschologist behavior. So what? Get off of your high horse. I take my job seriously, and I take the money seriously. You may be in the career to help people, but I'm not. I never was. In actuality, I thought it would just be interesting and it is. I don't treat my patients like shit anyway. They're not supposed to find out I'm laughing at them. It was an accident, not my fault.

moralfags aside, do you have any good stories to tell?

30 Name: Anonymous : 2008-02-14 02:18 ID:DkSXI2zy

>>29

Endless stories. Some people are fucked up beyond belief. There's a guy I had who was arrested because he was masturbating while he was getting a haircut. Eventually he ended up in my office. As it turns out, he has a haircutting fetish because his mother used to always cut his hair as a kid. And she breastfed him until he was SIX. Also, he found his dad after he killed himself. Of course I did the usual good psychologist routine. "Oh well it's perfectly okay to have fantasies as long as you don't expose people to them. You can think whatever you want in your head, but you can't let your thoughts affect other people..." and so on. My friends and I thought those tapes were a hoot.

It's kind of "funny", but sill I think it's more pathetic.

Then again, your comportment might be a way to shield yourself from the dark side of people you are "taking care" of. I suppose that with your kind of job empathy would be a major handicap.

34 Name: Anonymous : 2008-02-18 09:20 ID:qwn7TLSf

Unfortunately, this guy could very well not have been a troll. Psychologists and Psychiatrists are still human, even /b/tard psychs are possible.

What shows me he isn't is that the fucking idiot claimed to be playing tapes with a large group of people from within and without the realm of his field. Not only would a psychologist be very leery of playing information because of confidentiality purposes (Ignoring ALL of the ethical implications that psychologists are to take to the utmost seriousness), but would be driven paranoid by worry that anyone in his circle could report them, misspeak when drunk, etc. It's just too damn risky.

Essentially, any Psych that fucking stupid would get v& in no time. They'd have to have a few thousand people's worth of fortune or incredibly strong social ties to not have that be the result.

Plus, the guy would sue. He wouldn't have to fear the whole "My word vs his" thing in court because Someone will crack or show enough of an issue to turn the situation in his favor.

Especially if he tells one of the jokes while one of the people from the room are on the stand.

It's a win-win situation for the client once the lose of being humiliated is over.

I'm employed as a psychiatric clinician and am a previous /b/-tard. I've never made fun of anybody, though.

Just for the record, though, nowhere will you find a psychologist/psychiatrist whom records a doctor-patient conversation these days. OP should have been a bit more convincing.

A psychiatrist would never mistakenly call themselves a psychologist. The fact that some psychologists prescribe drugs does not prove that you have a medical degree.

Quite frankly, you were being unprofessional, hence it was your own fault this happened. If you fail to realise this, then I strongly question your qualifications to counsel others.

57 Name: Anonymous : 2008-03-18 19:13 ID:dlo1jI49

Protip: Psychologists cannot prescribe drugs what so ever.

58 Name: Anonymous : 2008-03-18 20:34 ID:CNlI1/aB

Well first and formostly; you're a terrible excuse of a human being, if what you've said it true Dr.OP.
Secondly, this post you made could be used as an admission of guilt, legal jive for "you're screwed" in a court proceeding.
If this patient were to come to me for legal assistance, first thing I would do would be to subpoena your work records, tax information re: billing procedures, and order a forensic investigation of your computer, which would in turn show that you made this post here which then shows culpability and breach of the ethics of Doctor/Patient confidentiality.
This all added up means that this patient, being the harmed party, could sue (emotional distress, pain and suffering + unitive damages, etcetera) your ass for everything your worth, and ever hoped to be worth, to such an extent your heirs would still be paying on the judgment.
Me; I like round numbers, and if this happened to me, or this man was my client, I'd sue you for $20,000,000.00
