Social proof (21)

For those of you who go out... what kind of social proof do you have in the crowds?

Do men recognize you and shake your hand? Do women recognize you and hug you? And do you notice how people treat you a little better when they do this?

Conversely, do you just stand in a corner and read a book?

Or, are you in the worst possible situation: stuck in a clique where the high-status people have given you the thumbs-down. How do you deal with that situation?

What do you mean by social proof? Do you mean status?

Social proof is recognition by your peers. It means they accept you, acknowledge your existence, and have a good esteem of you.

Social proof is something somewhat hard to earn, but yields great rewards - because once you've stepped in that direction, other people come to you naturally ("this guy is admired by his friends, he must be wonderful, let's admire him").

That's why it's hard to "stand out" in a group that's already filled with "strong" characters, and that's why it's important to have a pal who praises you (and you do the same for him). That way each of you benefits from somewhere to build up from.

That's exactly why Piccolo can't stand out among the rest of the characters in DBZ. I mean the guy's green FFS, but even that doesn't help.

Depends on the crowd.

If I'm at school, I'm in a corner reading a book till classes start. Then, if I'm in a class I like, I'll stand out, because I love answering questions. Because of this, I know my teachers way more than my fellow students.

When I'm with my friends, most of whom either don't go to this school, or I just never see in school, people like me. If they didn't, I wouldn't be their friend.

When I'm at a concert, I usually only know the people I go with, but I'm also usually able to strike up a conversation with the people around me. (To a point, considering how loud it gets in those places.) It's just about the only situation I'm ever in where I'm not incredibly shy around strangers - often including the bands I've come there to see. However, I've never managed to go home with anyone's contact info, and the one time I got to stand around in a small group talking to a band I was pretty much ignored.

So a mixture of all three, I guess?

I have really high social proof at my college, whenever I walk in, in the morning everyone rushes to greet me. But I hate it at times. I would like to go unnoticed and blend in with the crowd on shitty days, not have everyone ask me a million pointless questions and tell me stuff I really don't care about.
