Not sure if this is the right board for this, but...

A close friend of mine recently had to get a pacemaker for a genetic heart defect (he's 34) and his hospital bills are at least $25,000. He's helped me pay for some stuff in the past through various means, so I was wondering what you guys thought would be a good way to help him out.

In case you're talking about cash, if you have a job or any source of income, save some cash and give it to him. Be open about it - "You've got a huge bill and helped me a lot in the past, so I wanna help you".

If you're not, help him find a job or means to pay for it.

I'd also speak about being close to help him if he needs with other stuff, but I think you're already doing so.

OP here.

>>2, he's got a steady job, and the pay ain't so great, but it's something he loves doing and isn't going to give up anytime soon. I, on the other hand, am still in school, and therefore broke as crap. I've mainly been trying to figure out some sort of fundraiser thing, since that (to me) seems to be the most effective route, short of people randomly donating money. Any ideas?

Write him a check for $25,000.

>>4, I don't have even $25, much less $25,000. Thanks anyway, though.

The only way is to get out in the community and talk to people about it, ring up your local newspaper about the situation,
and tell them you are starting a fundraising raffle or something, ring around his friends asking for 5 bucks a pop and use what little money you do have and whatever his friends give and buy something people want, then sell tickets for the raffle for like $1.00 for one entry 1.75 for 2 entires and $3 for 5 entries.

oh yeah don't underestimate the kindness of stores, ask to speak to the managers of various places, ask them to donate something for the raffle explaining the whole situation, in return you will have the tickets printed to say kindly sponsered by X organisation.

Yeah, a fundraiser is definitely the way to go. Even if you can't raise a lot of money, it still shows your friend that you're really trying.
Like >>8 said, if you ask stores they'll sometimes donate for a good cause. If you can, try and put together a cheap booklet with advertising space you can sell? If it's for a good cause they'll be even more likely to donate.

Good luck to you and your friend!!

Thank you guys, seriously. I'm going to talk to some people and see what I can do, and I'll keep you guys posted on anything new.
