Mother's Spending Habits (8)

23 year old semi-hikki living at home here.

My mother has more or less gone insane. She refuses to get a job and sits around the house drinking a lot. She shakes my dad down for a bigger share of his salary each month and he trusts her to pay the bills and she often redirects that money towards buying more fancy restaraunt meals and decorations for the house.

She even borrows my 15 year old sister's babysitting money to buy more stupid shit. She even signed up for a credit card in my name and is using it. I'm curious if anyone here has had a similar experience or has any advice on how to stage an intervention. She just freaks out at ANY sort of criticism.

Try this:

Take a good hour out of everybody's schedule, and have the whole family sit down together. Everyone can take their turn talking about the problem. 'Why' is an important question. Get down to the root cause of the problem, and everyone can cooperate to fix it when they're on the same page.

>>2 Yeah, what Lucas said. Sort of an intervention , but i would prepare what you would say, don't go at it half assed. Do your homework and goodluck!

I would flee and just let her pile up the debt and let the creditors start the hunting season. Time for you to get a job and move out.

My mom used to be kind of like that. We eventually figured out she was spending to fill an emotional hole in the relationship with my step-dad. Sort of like people who eat when they're sad and stuff--only with money; and God help you if you tell her she has a problem.

OP here. I do have a (shitty) job and I'm looking into moving out. But I still worry about my dad.

I'm in debt from a failed college experience, and I'm looking into bankruptcy to wipe out the credit cards(two of my own, and the one she signed up for me) and the back tuition(yes, I know I still have to pay student loans back) and once that ordeal is done with I want to move out.

Wow, you whole family seems to suck at dealing with money. Maybe you should all take a course at the nearest adult education center.
