Visualization experiment (10)

I'm wondering if any of you might be willing to help me out with something.

I've recently learned about this interesting visualization exercise and I believe it may have some real merit.

I'd like any of you who are willing to do the exercise to let me know that you are going to do it, and how you feel at the end of the week.

It doesn't have to be a week, exactly, you can start now, but let me know the results at the end of next week if possible. Of course, if you want, you can post what you're experience with it has been whenever you feel like it.

Also, it would be appreciated if you let me know how it has affected your ability to deal with stress, anxiety, fear, anger, depression, etc.

I'll give everyone more info, as to why I would bother to ask anyone to do something like this, when next week is up.

One more thing: I suggest that you try to put this into practice especially when you are under stress, etc.

Here is the exercise:

Visualize brilliant white light at the tip of your right big toe, fill the toe with light, and then fill the other toes on that foot with light.

In the same way, fill the toes on the left foot with light.

Now fill your feet with light.

And just keep moving the light up your body until your entire body is filled with light.

When you've done that, sit with the visualization of your entire body filled with light for however long you want.

This should be done everyday, at least once a day.

Now, throughout the period that you are doing the exercise, please make a record of how long you've done it, how many times, and what changes you have noticed. Post them here if you can (you don't have to be specific about the changes, of course).

You'd just be ignoring the problem instead of fixing it. May as well do drugs.

All I ask is that you try it, and see the results for yourself. And I would like you to relay the results to me because it would be helpful.

I'm constantly visualizing things. It's how I think. It helps me deal with problems because I can rationalize them, not pretend there's a holy Jesus-light being emitted from the point of conflict.

That's good.

Hi,

I started doing it, I did it once while reading this post... It's winter and very cold even with heating and two sweaters on I was still feeling cold, but after visualizing the light, It felt warm.

Then I go to the kitchen to make a sammich, and there is this annoying roommate of mine staring at me. This always makes me too self-concious about my movements and slows me down, but I tried to visualize the light again... and I felt awesome. Instead of "What, am I acting weird or why is she staring at me" it was like "I'm so pretty she can t take her eyes off of me".

Well it's only been like half an hour, we will see.

It's good that you have this healthily rational approach to problems, but there's no need to dismiss this sort of meditations as nonsensical.
Using your imagination is not irrational. We all know there isn't really any light in our bodies. It's just a visualization.
But things like this do actually have beneficial effects, if only that they make you feel nice.

I gave it a try just now. I noticed it took me rather long and took quite some concentration to fill up my entire body properly.
I've done chi-meditations like this before, on a beginner's level, a good while ago. I've also been doing Tai Chi for the past three years. I have no excuse for having trouble with this. :P

By the way, à propos meditation and rationality: I also happen to be a devoted science fanboy, and working on a Master of Philosophy degree.

I never said anything about ignoring problems, nor did I say this was a whole solution to any problem in itself.

I used to get really stressed out during my chemistry tests, and consequently I'd have mind blanks even though I could do the questions under any other circumstances. My teacher at that time told me a technique which was a variation of the the white light one. Instead of visualising white light passing though your body, imagine a crown of thorns starting at your head, and being pushed down your body, all the way to the feet. Whilst I appreciated his advice, it didn't work for me. Perhaps because I'm not religious, and I don't really have a spiritual connection with the crown of thorns, I'm not sure. But I found that taking deep breaths were effective.
