I totally agree with Lovelock. What he says might sound exaggerated, or even crazy, but imagine what it would have felt like to hear some nut say that the world was round way back in the day...

I think it's mysticism. And it does not merit the label "hypothesis." A hypothesis is falsafiable and therefore testable. This isn't science at all, it's religion.

It has no explanatory power. It makes no testable predictions. It is speculation only, and religious speculation at that.
