Graphics cards! (8)

hellos.

even after 9 solid years of computering, I have never once bought a graphics card, each time they were freebees.

unfortunately now that is not conductive to good humors, as the best I have is an Nvidia 440, which while it can pull off some impressive stunts with the rest of my hardware, it is beginning to show its age on things like Dawn of war (which since there is an expansion in a few months, I want to play it to its max)

SO!

requestoring productive debate on graphics cards under.. $80/£40

Do you have AGP or PCIe? The Nvidia 6200 series should give you more punch than your current card for about that price. If you're serious about playing something at max settings you will have to be prepared to shell out for the midrange or upper tier cards($130-200). One of the 6800s should be able to pump out high framerates at high res and high FSAA/AF. The equivalent ATI cards seem to have better performance, but my friends have had too many driver issues for me to reccomend them for gaming.

cheers, and AGP, not looking for something that can redescribe nirvana, just tide me over until something seriously good comes out.

If you get a 6200, there's a lot of different configurations floating around. Make sure it's one with at least 128MB onboard RAM (TurboCache doesn't count), and a 128 bit memory interface.

Radeon 9800 Pro is a popular last generation AGP card. The 128MB ones are fairly cheap.

Thread Resurection!

How much money do you think one would have to spend on a graphics card to be able to play new games well, with high settings, and around 40fps or higher?

Oh jeez, more than I would want to spend. Maybe getting a dedicated system is better these days? You know, PS3 and such.
