So I use bittorrent primarily for unliscensed anime. The problem I have with it is I have a cable modem with a very good connection speed. I end up uploading as fast as my computer can handle and downloading very slowly. I always end up uploading 4 times or more information then what I download. It's pathetic to see myself downloading 4k a second and uploading 50k a second. What's worse is because bittorrent uploads as fast as my connection can handle my upload rate lags anything else I try and do. I can't play any games while using bittorrent which means I can only download while I vend in games or sleep. Any solution to this?
Read BitTorrent's documentation more carefully. You can limit the maximum upload rate.
Other people may tell you to download a third-party "enhanced" client, but don't do that unless you enjoy being banned from half of the trackers out there for some reason or another.
You rule. Looks like I'll need to upgrade my bittorrent client to 4.0 though. No problem, it'll be worth it.
Thoguh the official client is alright, may I recommend using a more feature rich client such as Azureus? Azureus normally gives me better speeds than the official client and that is worth the aditional needed RAM imo.
You can even run it on a headless (On a server or whatever) and only controll it from the command line if you want to, they have a tutorial on their wiki for doing this.
I normally just run azureus in a screen session, and whenever i want to add a torrent I just ssh into the server, attach to my azureus session and type a few commands, works amazingly well.
My advice: stay away from Azureus (that Java memory whore!), and use uTorrent, BitComet or BitTornado.

I see no one listens to me. Enjoy your bans because your client doesn't support obscure feature x, is easily hacked to upload nothing while reporting otherwise (the official client is too, but logic never stopped tracker operators) or just hasn't been "authorized."

I do know (And I suspect most people who would want to run bittorrent headless would know), but many people don't know that you can do this with azureus.
I only found out after having fiddled around for a long time with the original client and bittornado, adjusting this setting and that setting and still not getting more than 100Kb/s with torrents that were runing at about 250Kb/s on my desktop machine (Azureus).
With Azureus, everything downloaded a lot faster, therefore I use it now... whatever works, I guess. Though if a client that was easy to use on the commandline (A nice ncurses inferface maybe?), with support for protritizing and not downloading certain files (And yes, I know the original client can do this, but It's a major pain to use that) popped up, I'd sure as hell give it a try.
... if I wasn't so lazy, I could write myself some sort of azureus wrapper or plugin... hm...
Also, I know of liek no tracker that bans Azureus, though a lot (Especially those who will ban you for low ratios) recommend turning DHT off.
I use uTorrent and BitLord, depending on which computer I'm on. So far BitLord is my favorite, but uTorrent is good too.
your download speed depends on your upload speed, that means if you dont upload you wont be downloading, if your upload limit is very low you might also not be able to download.
they did this because of many leechers, because as soon as the download finishes they stop uploading.

Sure, sounds fair and all that but I shouldn't upload so damn fast that it lags my computer. Nor do I find it the least bit fair to upload sometimes 10x the speed I download at just because my connection's good.

ctorrent is, however, banned on most trackers unless you spoof the Agent, which is risky. And it's a bit buggy (even after patches) in my experience.

And how would said private trackers find out if you use DHT? If they ban you because of the DHT then it's not because you use the DHT - it's because your upload wasn't recorded properly and your ratio gets very low (which may happen when you use the DHT, but should pretty much not happen anymore).
Also, tracker operators which don't want anyone to use the DHT with their torrents should, like, get of their lazy asses and set the freakin private flag already. Pretty much any client that can do DHT respects the flag.
I read today about a 6gb torrent where a guy got banned by the tracker site in the middle -- but, he was the uploader!
Without DHT, the downloaders would have been SOL.
I've downloaded the entire internet....twice....and I've never EVER been banned from a tracker for using bitcomet. I've been trying utorrent as of late though and I might switch to that full time.
oh and I hated azureus - so damn slow and lagged up my entire system (amd 3800+ 1 gig of ram)
Why would anyone use anything other than utorrent?
I don't mean this as some huge endorsment of utorrent, I just use utorrent and I don't know what else I'd need in a bt client that ctorrent or dtorrent or xtorrent or whatever would offer.
A decent uncluttered GUI would be a start.

This is probably a bit of a thread derailment, but is it possible to run bittorrent in an effective manner (none of this "outgoing connections only" bullshit that gives me the red frowny face or whathaveyou) if you're behind NAT and have no way to forward ports?

BitComet can do NAT Traversal ( http://www.bitcomet.com/doc/faq.htm#NatTraversal ), though I haven't tried that since I can forward. I think there was also a fork of azureus that could do it.
Also, your NAT device may be able to do UPnP or Nat port mapping (Which is basically automatic port forwarding), many clients support UPnP, some can do portmapping.

I used to use Azureus on my W2K3 server, but it would often lag, whore memory, and just close itself for no reason. Upon investigation, the only reason that could be found was "Java is shit". Whether it is or it isn't is irrelivant now - I switched to µTorrent and could never go back.
Im using azureus and always have and it never gave me any problem/ram hog or crahses.
I also found out that i download the fastest with Azureus after configuring it in Advance mode :D
