Corporate interests.
- All it takes is for them to get the implementation right just once. Breaking a proper security model encased in end-to-end hardware encryption using something like AES is hard. If you do break it, piracy will likely be the least of our worries.
- Convincing consumers is much akin to cooking a frog, especially when corporations are both consistent, persistent, and potentially immortal. It might take decades, but it will still happen.
I doubt they'll completely wipe out piracy, but the days of copying and crackz are probably limited.
How OSS factors into this is an exercise left to the reader.
