> Ubuntu Christian Edition is a free, open source operating system geared towards Christians. It is based on the popular Ubuntu Linux. Ubuntu is a complete Linux-based operating system, freely available with both community and professional support.
> The goal of Ubuntu Christian Edition is to bring the power and security of Ubuntu to Christians. Ubuntu Christian Edition is suitable for both desktop and server use. The current Ubuntu release supports PC (Intel x86).
> Ubuntu Christian Edition includes more than 16,000 pieces of software, but the core desktop installation fits on a single CD. Ubuntu Christian Edition covers every standard desktop application from word processing and spreadsheet applications to web server software and programming tools.
> Along with the standard Ubuntu applications, Ubuntu Christian Edition includes the best available Christian software. The latest release contains GnomeSword, a top of the line Bible study program for Linux based on the Sword Project. There are several modules installed with GnomeSword including Bibles, Commentaries, and Dictionaries.
> Ubuntu Christian Edition also includes fully integrated web content parental controls powered by Dansguardian. A graphical tool to adjust the parental control settings has also been developed specifically for Ubuntu Christian Edition. These features are truly what sets Ubuntu Christian Edition apart.

I actually tried out one of the download links to make sure it wasn't an ellaborate prank.

Looks like they used "Ubuntu Customization Kit" ( http://uck.sourceforge.net/ ) to create their distro.
Since making decent working Linux distros is becoming easier every day, as evidenced by the many liveCDs created only for one specific use or to showcase a specific software, and since Mozilla has helped a lot grassroots open-source marketing, what do you think will happen next?
Will every opiniated nerd try to co-opt Linux/FOSS or to market it to minorities?

(Please do not shit up the thread with religion-bashing.)

Hikarunix. Need I say more? ( http://www.hikarunix.org/ )

Also, I think this is pretty cool, I'm not going to download it but this is certainly nice for very religious people or people learning about religion. The developers should also have pretty good arguments for making people use it, with sharing stuff with others being a good thing to do for christians.

That domain name is beyond awesome, IMO.

I found out about http://ichthux.com/ a few minutes after posting >>1 - it's like the kubuntu of UCE.
But unlike UCE, it doesn't even try to pretend to add any value at all, and visiting the homepage is more a "LOL" experience than UCE, which would be more a "WTF" experience, because of some gems like these on the ichtux homepage:

> It is based on Kubuntu in order to provide the best desktop environment of the moment, together with Christian programs and settings

Christian settings? lol what
And among the 9 features on the homepage: "a Christian emoticons theme by default in Kopete".

> That domain name is beyond awesome, IMO.

I think their actual domain christianubuntu.com, but I just had to link to that one.

I think that's pretty cool how there are distros for very specific uses - I recently used an installable livecd made for ruby on rails development ( http://www.railslivecd.org/ ) on an old laptop to have a quick development workstation while on vacation.

Since making your own OS is becoming really easy and torrents work great, I wonder just how specialized linux distros will become. I'm sure that we're going to see a lot of derivative vanity distros that only consist of tweaked settings, more software by default, and a different visual theme.
I'd even bet that one of the first of them will try to be as complete a Mac OS X rip-off as possible - this one never goes out of fashion in the computer ricing communities.

screenshot here BTW: http://ichthux.com/files/screenshots/emoticons.png

Also, UCE already managed to attract a (not very funny) parody site, http://christianubuntu.blogspot.com/

Some of the facts are quite funny, my favourite:

> Ubuntu Christian Edition has got a modified version of fsck that
> prints the message "this is a good moment for praying" if
> launched in automatic repair mode on a corrupted file system.

...

Because, you know, I do that even when there's no message telling me to do so. In fact, I believe the last time I prayed was when my raid array got fuxed.
