The Rebels carved out a slice of the galaxy and became the Republic. The remains of the Empire (or only part, who knows) rebranded as the First Order and a new rebellion starts up because the Republic doesn't want to get involved in killing another dictator.

Also I think the entire purpose of the stormtrooper yelling traitor was to show that Finn isn't an amateur at fighting with melee weapons. Rey's got no excuse though beyond that damn good with the force.

Wasn't a great movie (holy shit, the second half is pretty dumb), but it felt refreshing to see a new star wars that felt like an original trilogy film rather than the prequels.
