There have been some stretches of time where I was single and I got the usual pitying comments and glances from friends and family, but it doesn't really bother me. I absolutely prefer to have a partner, but I find it better to be alone than in a draining or 'wrong' relationship. Tom strikes me as quite the workaholic, and he might very well prefer to just be single or hang with friends or be in some kind of casual arrangement instead of investing time and effort into something he knows isn't going to last.
