Thread to talk about the actor Tom Hiddleston

2 Name: Anon : 2016-02-19 08:10 ID:gDkQNPan

I take it all back, the question was nuts. Though the main complaint seemed to be the rambling "I love you" intro which is a feature of many q&a, I would have thought.

When I saw someone asked the scratching question I nearly jokingly posted that maybe it was her. How right I was. She is a right oddball. But there are some bloggers who are normal and have good info.

16 Name: Anon : 2016-02-20 09:08 ID:u9oBHuVQ

>>15 There is an apologia pro vita sua on her tumblr page which makes toe-curling reading. She thinks TH wanted to hear the question and Hugh Laurie rained on her parade. What it tends to suggest is that Hugh Laurie is a very good judge of character who knew where this was going in 5 words.

17 Name: Couch Potato : 2016-02-20 09:21 ID:Heaven

>>16 She lives in her own little world, doesn't she? But then that's always the case with these types, it's never their fault, TH is obviously always in agreement with them, it's other people that keeps him from saying so.

19 Name: Anon. : 2016-02-20 13:12 ID:Ep2jQcLc

It's never a good thing when the crazy fans are more vocal and visible than the sane ones. Sadly, the loons always seem to be front and center so often, especially in his fandom.

Here we were thinking that we all knew - too well - who the most infamous TH fan was, but now there's a new contender for wonkiest egg in the basket. Sigh.

Welcome to 7 everyone!

20 Name: Anon. : 2016-02-20 13:45 ID:xixDWTnE

>>16 I tried to read it, couldn't. I'll try again later.

The need for an apologia, especially one of that ridiculous length, suggests she's getting it in the neck big time from the online community. Good. I'd like to think HL's reaction - and the reaction of those on Tumblr and Twitter - would be a lesson, but I wouldn't put money on it.

>>11 It's always the ones that set themselves up as paragons of behavior that exhibit the worst behavior themselves. It's not surprising that she would think her question was appropriate if she thought the behavior of some Donmar fans was appropriate - and worthy of defense.

>>20 She is one of the ones I was thinking about when I said at the tail end of the last board that the superfans love to take the others to task for disrespecting his art by joking about the Hiddleconda. This particular individual is one of the chief offenders. I think she intended the question as some very earnest question about character in Unrelated but failed to see that a q&a about a different project 10 years later is not the time (or indeed to appreciate that the people who joke online about the Conda have the self-control to realise that if they meet him they shouldn't ask for measurements).

...and now I just read her long post blaming Hugh Laurie. At Donmar she blamed the staff...

24 Name: Couch Potato : 2016-02-20 17:42 ID:8nuBIjc8

That fan in question is insane and she has a long sorted history in the TH fandom.

Bit of background: a few years ago she defended several fans who were accused of harassing Tom and chasing him down the street after Coriolanus. She is fond of the term "fan shaming" and used it against those who were calling these out of control fans out. I am finding it unbelievable that people on tumblr are defending her for what happened several days and putting Hugh Laurie on blast instead. Yes because her question about Unrelated was the most important thing of all at a film Q&A for a The Night Manager and how dare Hugh call her out on her out about her ridiculous question.

25 Name: Couch Potato : 2016-02-20 17:43 ID:8nuBIjc8

I was the one who just posted that, not sure why it's marked "couch potato".

>>23 There is a nice and normal tumblr person called enchanted by hiddles who lives in Berlin and went along. She said it was mortifying, but that HL was actually trying to be kind by deflecting away from the crazy.

The most revealing thing was the comment by the culprit that the q&a was "my big chance". I have come across this phenomenon before. My mother in law bought a white outfit for my wedding day (no. I wasn't Bridezilla, truly, but just no) and when I called this into question she said in an incredibly hurt voice, "But it's MY BIG DAY."

28 Name: Anon : 2016-02-20 18:12 ID:k7FAacOJ

Would they have got it if someone had asked a question starting "when you played Loki, did you....?" There seems to be a misconception that because she asked a stupid question about an arty farty film that was ok.

Ah well. I would say I have a lot of sympathy for her as she is now being surrounded by all the other tumblr wingnuts with their flaming torches, aniyuer aspect of the fandom that I hate. However she has been the ringleader in that behaviour previously so I can't muster up much sympathy.

That's when you send in your maid of honor - and you send her in like a Sherman tank. You don't even touch that, you pass it along to your hard-nosed, enforcer MOH. It's the only true and valuable lesson I've learned from wedding prep.

>>26 your MIL thought it was HER day? Oh god oh jeez...no. Just no. I'm more in shock over that than the cringeworthy Q&A moment.

On that topic, her entire post pins the blame on Hugh Laurie for "hijacking her moment". Her moment of what? Her moment with Tom? A big long post that in a nutshell says - It's all Hugh's fault and Tom really wanted to answer her question but Hugh ruined everything with his stupid antics and just ugh but Tom was lovely and we could've had a moment but DAMN YOU HUGH LAURIE! eye roll The Internet is being very kind to her compared to how she's lambasted and cyber pitchfork mobbed other TH fans in the past.

Anyway, away from bridal politics and onto a more important topic. Since TNM isn't coming out in the US for another 5 years or something, are you Stateside peeps watching it on Iplayer via a proxy server? Or is anybody waiting? I seriously don't want to ruin anybody's fun with unintended spoilers.

If anyone is saving themselves for AMC I may have to employ Anon's patent spoiler-free weekly review:

Tension: taut/average/flaccid
Plot: Byzantine/fine after a glass of wine/a five year old could follow it
Level of bromance: Thor-Loki/Mckellen-Stewart/Saunders-Trump
In this episode TH is: clothed/shirtless/bum out again/Michael Fassbender

40 Name: anonsy : 2016-02-20 23:41 ID:V6C+Feoq

>>39 We could always start a new thread specifically for TNM. That way we could have intense discussions about TH'S exact level of bum exposure without worrying about spoilers.

41 Name: Whatsinaname : 2016-02-20 23:42 ID:89pEWkso

>>37 i'll be doing the same thing as anonsy. I can't remember the AMC U.S. start date but I'm not waiting that long. Tumblr Spoliers helped kill nearly every surprise in Crimson Peak, so I'm not going to let that happen again.

If enough people will be waiting, we could always use the 'Tim Hoddleston' thread to have spoiler-filled discussions. Those wanting/needing to wait could just not pop in. The Night Manager, starring Tim Hoddleston.

Or I could copy Anon and make a review system based on heart-eyes and Emmy statues a la twitter.

My review - by the numbers:

Number of awesome opening sequences: 1
Number of slightly slow paced episodes: 1
Number of close-ups of TH's eye: 3,267 (really, what was up with that?)
Number of love scenes: 1 (and too short - what you see in the trailer is all there is!)
Number of times we all wanted to be Aure Atika: ALL the times
Number of blood splattered dogs: 1
Number of times TH worshipped the porcelain god: 1
Number of bum shots: 0 (we were promised the bum!)
Number of cliffhangers: one...in front of a snowy cliff!

One shaving scene (sooo brief - all in the trailer!)
One post coital cuddle scene (heart eyes!)
One cooking breakfast barefoot scene.

And one slightly odd episode. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate it, but the setup and the characterisation felt a bit clunky to me. Pine in particular did what he did solely it seemed to kick start the plot - I felt little if any sense of what kind of person he was and what might motivate him to do such a thing. And the female characters apart from Burr felt like ciphers. My husband snorted audibly when AA hove into view - [SPOILER] "she might as well have shown up to reception naked" quoth he. I have heard that the second episode is a lot better once the set up has been disposed of.

>>91 For that reason, although I know what you mean about it being too slow, it also in some ways felt strangely rushed. One of the brilliant things about the 1970s/80s adaptations was that they were unafraid of doing "nothing" from a plot perspective and using vignettes to build character. They drew them all so brilliantly that by episode 2 you feel like you have known them for ages. Also Ian Richardson as Bill Haydon. That man invented the meaning of the words heart eyes. He was utterly gorgeous.
