Thread to talk about the actor Tom Hiddleston

851 Name: Anon : 2016-03-26 17:06 ID:C1I+SOXz

>>849 He wore brown shoes at TIFF with his pale grey jacket and trousers. That outfit was all from Reiss so I am sure he picked it himself. He looked nice - he can do it without a stylist!

I like the grey shoes and I am not sad to see the boots being given a rest. They snuck in a couple of days ago with the other polo shirt.

I was thinking back to Cannes - on that day there was no grooming because he travelled overnight by some weird route as there was a strike or something. He was pictured arriving in the blue suit with wet hair - I think he showered and changed at the airport and went straight to the photocall. He looked great. Nuff said.

Yet another post screening q&a yesterday at the Lincoln Plaza. He must now have watched the movie more times than any other person in the world!

I hope he has today off to eat his Easter eggs.

Or hang out with BC and wife, who are also in NYC for some reason.

Does anyone know the official reason why Wrenn replace EO on the Q&A panels?

855 Name: Anon : 2016-03-28 13:52 ID:qAvx5iXW

He is on Colbert tonight and doing a live BAFTA NYC q&a (too many acronyms!).

>>854 I am not sure EO was ever officially doing these events. Work with Jeremy?

>>855 I forgot about the movie with Jeremy Renner.

FYI: TH is on Steven Colbert tonight, if you're in the US, to promote both ISTL and TNM.

Apparently he is hitting the road this week all across the US to promote ISTL at screenings and on local radio:

To look at TH in these pics, you'd think they were taken on the same day. Looking at JH, you realize they weren't - TH is just wearing the exact same outfit.

Here's the podcast with TH and EO. I haven't listened yet, but sounds good.

>>858 It's actually only playing at one place in NYC - The Angelika theatre where they did Q/As. Limited release is really limited! I think I'm going to wait until it's in a few more theaters on Friday.

I will be buying a ticket for another movie and then going into this one. I will be drinking before and during. I will be ordering an 'I Survived ISTL' t-shirt.

871 Name: Anon. : 2016-03-28 23:37 ID:Yd/Eu4ac

>>870 I've paid that much for a dress (not the wedding dress). It's much nicer than a polo shirt and has seen me through 7 years, and if I maintain my weight, I'll be buried in that dress. Even if you have the money, that is too much for a shirt.

Was is Anonon who said she didn't want singing? Sorry, sister. It looks less cringe-tastic because Colbert is joining along, but....

Singing, more hats and spoons.
I will watch both these interviews squinting through one eye when drunk.

>>870 That's what happens when you get a stylist- suddenly your cheap cotton v- necks are replaced by ludicrously priced cashmere. Such a shame, with the help of his sunglasses they were almost sinking to his navel

877 Name: Anon : 2016-03-29 07:59 ID:qAvx5iXW

>>873 I am impressed that Charlie Rose is available internationally! Way to go, Charlie! Other thoughts:

1) Earnest men sitting round a table mansplaining Hank Williams.
2) Tom's face when MA got the mic and went on for a while!
3) MA has made a move about HW and he says he still doesn't know why HW wrote the songs he did and was a genius. This explains a lot about how poor the movie was. We come to you for guidance, Marc. You lived with and were passionate about this man's life for god knows how many years and when people ask what made him tick you just shrug?
4) Moment of unintentional hilarity for Brits. Clip of TH as HW drinking from teeny weeny bottle of American beer. Charlie [Serious Voice]: "He had an addiction." British people: pfffffffffhhhhhh!
5) Impressed by CR generally. I watched the whole thing. In Britain we have crap like Graham Norton or serious stuff like Newsnight. There's nothing for those who drool over TH but still have some higher brain activity.

878 Name: Anon : 2016-03-29 08:08 ID:qAvx5iXW

>>876 Put into context: apparently the blue Alexander McQueen suit was $1600. Also, he has 2 of these polo tops, one in navy and one in grey. I would give anything to have been a fly on the wall when the stylist was explaining why he needed to spend $2400 on knitwear. I do hope she got him a discount.

Don't worry, I think he will ruin the cashmere by stretching it. You can't keep a good man down. London has a terrible epidemic of clothes moths. I don't give much for its chances.

>>876 Call me a cynic but they knew this was on the cards from day 1 didn't they, given that [SPOILER] they changed the ending from the book?

880 Name: Anonon : 2016-03-29 09:35 ID:DohS3ENz

>>878 I highly doubt TH has paid for many of his clothes over the last few years. He has clearly been sponsored by labels and most likely had a stylist who chose his capsule wardrobe. It's only now that he has a high profile stylist who is leveraging her own profile from the collaboration that we are finally becoming aware.
I must say, the bi- annual tennis parade has become somewhat of a cheesy advertisement, on par with strategically placed coke bottles in movies. Wearing Lauren in the Lauren stadium and posing backstage in the Lauren marquee. What a shock he is wearing so much Lauren on this tour!
>>879 Absolutely, I cynic with you.
The only chance this series had of not reappearing was if it completely bombed. I guess the level of AMC re-investment rides on the ratings in the States. Since it's returning to our screens this time next year they will have to shoot it soon after Raganork.

Did he play the spoons? That scene in Archipelago was almost worth sitting through Archipelago.

882 Name: Anon : 2016-03-29 15:09 ID:VhNAEDLk

>>880 I am sure he hasn't paid for his suits and all those dinner jackets. I also never thought in a million years he chose the RL sweaters he's been seen in over the last 6 months so someone has been helping. But I bet he paid for and chose a lot of his casual wardrobe up to TIFF. A lot of it seemed to come from Reiss and there was so little of it and it was all pretty cheap stuff. I thought it looked authentically chaotic!

>>877 Charlie Rose is the good stuff when it comes to interviews.

Yes, our version of drinking beer is sad compared to, well, the world. Skinny bottles of piss water, really.

>>881 He really played spoons, yes. I'm on my phone and can't link; Torrilla probably has it by now.

>>876 I always side-eye the second series of a tv show. Broadchurch was brilliant; Broachchurch 2.0 - not so much.

No confirmation of who will come back. Burr seems to be likely (after maternity leave). Maybe Steadman? So much can go wrong with TNM2: Roper gets off, but has suffered amnesia at the hands of the Egyptians; this then allows Pine to just do exactly what he did before but in ever so slightly changed circumstances.

I'm assuming that if TH returns (Working Title: No Longer a Night Manager) that his arse will also make a return. Maybe he'll go undercover as a male stripper to bring down an all-female gang of drug traffickers.

885 Name: Anon. : 2016-03-29 18:45 ID:nI/pUk8y

>>880 I've wondered about how designers 'lend' to male stars. For women it is a case of lending just for the occasion, as they likely won't wear it again. I remember EO standing in the rain at TIFF and worrying about that terrible dress and saying, 'I don't own this dress!'

Is the same the case for men? Do they have to return them after wearing, or do they get a deal for a little advertisement and get to keep them?

>>882 I think the treble RL at Wimb, last year may have been the first time TH aligned himself with a designer. The RL account tweeted about it, and he took pics as Anonon said; I don't know if we've seen that sort of advertisement before (I could be wrong!). I feel the Reiss stuff might have jut been TH...maybe Luke too!

Hopefully he hasn't paid the full price of $2400 for 2 polo shirts!

>>885 I've noticed he's been wearing (under)pants a lot more recently. (Confirmed by the position of the junk and the waistband peeking out). This makes me think the recent suits are on loan. You don't go commando in another man's fatigues.

Other designer items I assume he got a discount for, or he snaffled from set. We remarked on Pine wearing TH's clothes but I wonder if it was the other way around. The costume department buys for his character and he kept some of it (eg the bright blue McQueen suit). Though saying that, some does seem to have been his - such as the hiking boots in ep2, which looked very like the ones he wore on his UNICEF trip.

It is all very interesting!

PS EO chose to borrow that dress? Words fail me.

>>884 OT: I hated Broadchurch season 2. The legal stuff was laughably inaccurate (http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2015-01-14/broadchurch-legal-what-does-a-real-criminal-barrister-think-of-the-court-drama). The interesting thing is that such inaccuracies seem to have made it "feel" wrong and implausible even for those who aren't from that world.

889 Name: Anon : 2016-03-29 19:25 ID:qAvx5iXW

>>880 PS The previous time he was at Wimbledon (with the JArthy!) he was wearing the blue Reiss suit. My recollection is that last summer was his first association with RL. I think RL has a hospitality tent at Wimbledon (in common with other sponsors like Veuve a liquor) but Centre Court is Centre Court - there isn't enough money in the world to get the Lawn Tennis Association to rename it the RL stadium!! So maybe not a totally obvious product placement.

Talks about Shit Island (apparently it has a trailer - Comic-Con, anyone?), shoehorns in The Work by answering a question the interviewer didn't really ask, rubbishes Sherlock rumors and says that the wall sex scene was 'an integral part of the narrative' - it really wasn't, but we liked it, Tom!

899 Name: Anonon : 2016-03-30 02:36 ID:cIasOM4O

I loved the Colbert interview. Finally some endearing spark and originality in amongst the scripted claptrap.

>>882 Nothing screams casual as much as that fan photo taken on the Gold Coast with at least two gaping holes in his wardrobe. He wasn't even jogging. I can't help but wonder if his natural inclination is to imitate a hobo and he has always needed a helping hand to coordinate chaotic casual.
>>885 He was aligned with Armani before RL and has been courting McQueen on the red carpet. McQueen plugged his recent appearance so I imagine they are on board as well.
>>884 I hope you pen the next script
>>885 >>887 Clothes are borrowed by stylists for photo shoots and RC appearances but sponsorship deals like RL mean that he has full access to their range in exchange for flogging it. It's extremely unusual for actors to use items from their own wardrobe on film sets- maybe for a fleeting scene, but panic sets in if pickups are required. Actors are sometimes gifted items or can purchase them at a reduced rate once production ends.
>>889 My bad about stadium sponsorship but he was most definitely a walking billboard that day:

I saw Colbert and I was impressed - again! I have to hand it to Colbert - he is a very good interviewer (an underrated art). Original questions, not afraid to show he is intelligent and the man can sing! (Colbert, I mean).

I liked the anecdote about the spoon damage, and TH's telling of it - "It's a nice memory now - or so she claims". When you get him off "I spent 6 weeks living with a gifted musician whose name is Rodney Crowell" he is a charming, clever and witty interviewee.

>>905 I finally caught up on the Horowitz podcast and Colbert last night. I thought both were great. Listening to the podcast, I can see what TH might have see/did see/does see (take your pick) in EO. She was funny and interesting - and her voice/laugh sounded much better than they sometimes do!

His stories were right on in the podcast. I think that there was no mention of RC and then the obligatory trotting out of the southern accent - that was nice. There was mention of the yodel, but not the stock phrase he's used to discuss it or a demo. Bonus, bonus!

Colbert touched my heart with mention of his Classics degree. And there should be a mic drop when people read Plato in the original Greek - shit's hard. He plays the spoons well - Archipelago should have just been him playing the spoons.

>>917 >>919 The bit about living out of 2 suitcases. This explains a lot I think. (The 2 items of clothing, the fact that he bought the furniture along with his new place).

Also, was he casting a little shade at BC? Interviewer says will you marry like BC? He responds, yeah, I will run out and grab the first woman I see....!

Longish and quite interesting interview on radio in NYC. Some familiar stuff, but expressed in a much less hackneyed way. At about 8.00 he denies point blank being a smoker and at about 11 denies having sung ever previously...! http://youtu.be/T6pe9h-5P5w

Also says that he will be filming TR from July in Australia for 6 months. I suppose he will be back home for a few months' rest after this tour.

>>921 'I did not have sexual relations with that cigarette...or Tinkerbell.'

If he's quit I might believe he and EO are on the outs. I think his 'I smoked with Hank' answer earlier was really a 'I smoked while spending a lot of time with my smoker co-star.' Damn, I was actually hoping they'd get married in Vegas, in white fringe. Okay, single, female country music stars - he's headed your way, make your moves!

I guess, technically, he didn't sing in TPF. You can't call what he did 'singing.'

He'd never make it as a politician with his schizophrenic answers - someone would call him out.

>>922 Yes, you articulate what was lurking unformed in my mind. Speaking as an ex smoker, it is very context-specific. If I had married a smoker I still would smoke.

Did you listen to it? He said - exact words - "No, no, I'm not [a smoker]" and that he didn't smoke real cigarettes while playing HW. Conspiracy theorists and fans of metaphor may find it amusing that he previously said to the Guardian "I did [smoke] a bit when I played Hank. A stupid idea". So how we know that in about September last year he thought that dating a smoker was stupid. See, it all fits in with that "they broke up" story in November...!!!!!!!!! (I'm joking here)(maybe).

>>923 I haven't listened. Once that Guardian article mentioned smoking, I was convinced something went on during filming. TH seems the sort who would take up smoking - if only a little/ socially - to spend time/connect with someone who smoked.

I'll agree that it's stupid to take up smoking as a way to spend time with someone - if that's what he meant.

I think he could still smoke socially but not consider himself 'a smoker.'

I am starting to think my bilious feelings are due to too much TH (and not entirely too many Easter eggs).

The amazing thing is that that tiny piece about women's lovely things has generated nearly 200 comments on CB (most of them batshit crazy), even after almost daily click bait articles on him. I feel the need to lie down in a darkened room. It's like 1984. I feel like I will turn on any radio channel and hear his voice.

>>932 Could be. It's interviews like this >>921 'I lived with a musician named Rodney Crowell,' the accent, the singing, etc. It's pretty watery gruel at this point - with only a few pieces of meat.

>>921 When the interviewer said, 'I wish CP had done better,' my buttocks clinched. Sorry your previous movie was crap. Best of luck on this also crap movie! How do these people get their jobs?

He's off to SF tomorrow, then Vegas for those awards, then North Dakota, Nebraska (shout out to Anon and qaz), then every Canadian province and finally that research center in Antartica. Then TNM promo begins!

>>936 I know it's mostly thin. I think I liked that one because it was 20 minutes and didn't feel rushed like these 5 minute tv slots. Getting desperate!

I tell you what, I did listen to the Favorite Song broadcast with John Benjamin Hickey (I only had time to post the link before). If you want a meaty interview that's your one. JBH is another good interviewer and very knowledgeable and passionate about music generally - as is TH, slightly to my surprise. It was a pleasure listening to him talk about a passion instead of dutifully plugging the product.

JBH adroitly steered him away from Hank until the very last song. Even then it was "why does this song have such universal appeal" and not "tell us about the time you had sex with Rodney and then played him a song and smoked a herbal cigarette after".

Has anyone actually seen ISTL yet? I looked at Rotten Tomatoes and the reviews almost made me cry. Sample: "If you've always thought, as I have, that Tom Hiddleston was such a good actor that he could salvage any movie, well, welcome to ISTL."

And on grinds the publicity tour. I have to hand it to him for continuing to polish this turd so assiduously. It must be incredibly demoralising.

>>940 Oh, god. As unfunny as TH can be...Loki'd, anyone? - Jim Carrey is even unfunnier. April Fool's is also good for showing you what terrible things can be dreamed up. Let's pray it's a joke.

>>942 It was at 12% at one point, but is now at 16%. The guy from the Globe gave is 3.5/4 stars and called it better than Walk the Line. It could become a little Marmite with time.

>>942 So, it's still only playing at the Angelika here. It's not anywhere else - not even next week! Not at either AMCs in the Village. These theatres tend to get most major releases, so this release is going to be small, or filter late into major theaters from the arthouses.

The problem is the Angelika is usually full of pretentious Soho types. And what with non-banked seats (I'm a shorty) and dodgy sound, it's just not a nice place to see a film. But maybe that will work with this film! I can't see or hear it...it's great! I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and go this weekend because I'm thinking I might not get the chance if I don't go soon.

It will be on Sunday when the boy's at work (shhhh, he must never know!). If I do go, I'll report back.

Have a great weekend everyone.

It does not surprise me at all though, American country music is absolutely unpopular in LT. If not for TH, I would still have no idea who HW was.

The only reference to ISTL I found in Lithuanian internets is a short video featurette on one of our news websites (a very popular one and actively commented on, BTW!) and it has no comments, no nothing, and the total number of views of 921. Three of those are mine.

Oh, look at that 'casually unbutton shirt' - I'm sure he and the stylist had a 30 minutes convo about it. I think he may be in danger of hyping himself out of Bond. He and Luke need to play this one carefully, which we all know is in neither's skill set: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3521247/Tom-Hiddleston-teases-casually-unbuttoned-shirt-television-appearance-alongside-Aaron-Paul-fans-call-James-Bond.html

I link this for rhetorical purposes. I find this interview so fascinating from a journalistic standpoint. So the original was in Hello (it seems), then the ES did an edit of it, then Anon posted a tumblr scan of what we thought was the actual Hello article, but this one - from the Philippines - has more than the Hello tumblr scan.

Would the original and full article please stand up?

Or am I confused/missing something obvious about this article.
