He's now filtering his mentions. He only leaves the replies that he likes. It doesn't delete them from Twitter but they are no longer visible on the replies to his tweets. When you go the person's profile, you can still see the tweet but if you click on it it doesn't show that it is a reply to his tweet.
Although I agree that some replies are stupid, he seems to be filtering replies that are related to the topic in question.
