I think in addition to fancying her, he is also very much infatuated with her celebrity, and how it reflects on him - being seen as cool, the guy who brings his guitar to parties (duet time!), the guy who is DATING TAYLOR SWIFT LOOK EVERYBODY ESPECIALLY THE PEOPLE WHO CALLED ME PUBEHEAD AT SCHOOL. Or so he hoped, though it hasn't quite shaped up like that so far.
