And, as I said upthread, he may be defiant about being made a fool of and that might also make him hang on tighter.

Plus, at the moment he looks besotted, is living his dream relationship and is in the honeymoon phase where he will do everything she wants. Unless he has a heart of flint he won't just give up on someone he is very into because of some adverse publicity (even though it seems to have been very widespread on both sides of the Atlantic). It may take more than a few months to wake up and remember what he wants out of life and/or to realise that media interest in this one isn't going to die down and that it will be like this forever.
