Apparently she was on holiday with CH the day the article came out, returning the next day, and leaving the airport in a separate car, leading fans to speculate they had split during the holiday. So:

TH probably hadn't been seen around her apartment at that time as she was on holiday and probably had been for some time.

She had probably already split with CH at aome one during the holiday and also very probably her publicist knew that as of 18 May. Feeding this lie to GC kicked over the traces of when the split had happened and gave them some breathing space to decide when to leak the news of the split.
