Lawyer's perspective: countersuing someone often makes me raise my eyebrows. On occasion it happens because the parties had a huge beef against one another, and it was just that one party issued proceedings first so the other had to countersue. More often in my experience it is a tactic used by a defendant who is bang to rights. It indicates that you didn't consider what happened was worth suing first and you only deploy it to sling some mud in your defence. The classic example is, lawyer sues client for unpaid fees. Client has never previously complained about the standard of service but countersues for squillions of ££ saying that lawyer was negligent.
