Thread to talk about the actor...oh fuck it. You know what to do

>>100 Fortunately for him and for us, no interviewer is likely to press him on a Tayto question; they can't risk him refusing an interview in future once his career has recovered from this mess. And, humor aside, I really wouldn't want to see TH pushed to the edge. He evidently wasn't doing well during that LA stop.

As we said above, he opened the door to the press again with the GQ article. He really could use someone on his team who can think through all the possible negative outcomes of these PR ideas.

One of the commenters to the ONTD post summed it up with a gif from Chicago: "He had it coming...he only had himself to blame."

>>90 Oh boy, it's not like we didn't foresee this, we said when the GQ profile was published that he opened a door on the subject and questions will be coming, but I thought he'd prepare some answers to give, not every journalist was going to be Edith Bowman, neighbour and occasional lunch companion.

>>91 At least he didn't say "some things are sacred".

>>97 Well! It might be the first time for taytay where it's her ex being the stalker! (I'm kidding, Ed probably invited him. For the good times in Rome.)

>>100 Tough promo tour for him, together with tiredness he never knows when someone is going to ask Tayto questions. And he'll have to go through it again in October with Thor3 because Taytay will be releasing her new album at the end of the year.

Sensible things Tom said: "I'd rather not talk about this if that's alright" (words he should have uttered a long time ago).

Silly things Tom said: all the stuff about having a publicity and private life which are separate.

I still don't think he gets it. Nobody would deny him the right to a private life if, like Adele, he said "oh by the way I got married and I didn't tell any of you!" Oddly for a classicist he doesn't not understand that when you lift the lid off Pandora's box, that is IT. Use your private life for publicity once and the press will hound you forever.

106 Name: Anon : 2017-03-07 08:13 ID:JdqnTY+R

BTW I did mean to say a "publicity life". It seemed to me he was talking about something other than a public life here - the fact that he is forced to do interviews etc.

Anyone else sense he has been phoning it in for this tour? Apart from the unenthusiastic expressed to the Telegraph, someone said after AOL Build that they had never heard him talk so little in a group interview....

>>106 Yes, I commented earlier that he seems really subdued on this tour. It's probably a combination of having seen the movie (which, according to an LA interview vid that popped up yesterday, happened before he came to LA); the mixed reviews, including at best "meh" for his role and performance; and the ongoing tayto questions that he though he'd quelled.

Even his body language is different (>>99).

>>105,106 I don't think he doesn't get it, since he used to be a little more private before. I think he decided to not keep it in mind because it was more convenient (or to go along to taytay requests).

I agree that he was referring to having to promote and having to subject himself to questions, even ones he doesn't like (because apparently his PR can't veto those questions). Of course it's because there's something negative to ask him about, in the past he didn't mind the attention. Luckily for him, once he leaves the US, he should be fine, it's unlikely journalists will ask in Japan.

>>101 The LA stop was also where he was when his did the Aussie interview. Which means he had to deal with a good amount of direct Tayto questions and indirect ones, I.e., how he was dealing with increased press scrutiny, fame, etc.

Agree with everyone saying things are off with him. He's a puppy still but one that's gotten a newspaper to the nose. I saw where a reporter asked him and BL to read out Stormzy lyrics. In the past, that would have tickled his mischievous side. He was going through the motions this time, balked at saying fuck and wouldn't say fudging as the interviewer suggested. At the end, he looked at the interviewer as if to say, 'Are you happy? I've jumped through the hoop.' Before he loved jumping through hoops. He's not having fun anymore.

In another interview the reporter mentioned how wonderful and supportive his fans were, and he very quickly turned it into an answer about the WORK.

I wonder if he's resentful at the press for not buying Tayto and raking him over the coals and for then continuing to bring it up. You didn't give me the support I needed with my fauxmance so I'm not giving you what you need.

116 Name: Couch Potato : 2017-03-07 14:48 ID:Heaven

So, I've just finished watching the AOL Build video, I don't think he looked subdued or anything, at least in this particular case. It's just that he was in the company of two other people that can and will take control of the conversation and interact with each other before an audience that is not only interested in him. He rarely had that in recent years.

>>117 My goodness. Tom's long pause was terrifying. And Savannah Guthrie concluding that the Swift media situation must have felt disconcerting to him, was slightly hysterical. Please, someone help Tom to craft a better answer that assumes some responsibility for his participation in the madness of the press attention, and a renewed desire to be guarded in future relationships. This is not going to away until he owns up in some way, or until he just says no comment, period, although it's a bit Kate for that. I was wrong about the Telegraph article being fodder for gossip sites...because everyone has picked it up: USA Today >>119, Vanity Fair, People, even Tiger Beat.

Maybe they make Pine the handler this second time. I just can't see him being the operative again. Maybe it's like Broadchurch and the second season is about Roper's trial. So many possibilities. I guess I can see TH in it, but hopefully with less annoying chuckling.

At one point it seemed like Tom Hiddleston’s official job title was “Taylor Swift’s PR Stunt Partner,” but now one of the thirstiest hos on the stroll wants everyone to respect the “privacy please” sign that is hanging on his door.

HAHAHAHA!

128 Name: Anon. : 2017-03-07 21:39 ID:5mVD0hPE

And a quick look at twitter:

- It is everywhere, yes >>125
- Savannah Guthrie is getting it in the neck for daring to ask that question...totally classless, intrusive, rookie, shameful, etc. The fan girls have brought out their pocket thesauri. Frighteningly, they are parroting TH by saying that his private life is private! They seem as clueless as he.
- This will go down as TH's 'bristle' moment. This seems to be the word most favored by articles.

Is this his team's secondary (GQ was primary) way of dealing with Tayto: get angry, get testy, bristle a bit and then it will explode - no one will ask you after that. I hope not.

129 Name: Anon : 2017-03-07 21:43 ID:JdqnTY+R

I read this very interesting comment on the CB thread about the testiness: it casts a new light on why he/Luke/studio PR is allowing interviewers to ask about Tayto.

As a former PR practitioner. The studio PR do have the clout to shut this down and I doubt they would object if he requested they enforce a NO list. Its in their interests to ensure that their macho star isnt constantly being reduced to a pop star groupie.

Serious outlets like BBC and Channel 4 will probably not interview you with a NO list. They dont see themselves as promotional outlets, so if you give them a list they simply wont have you on. Thats what happened with RDJ. The interviewer doesnt do puff pieces and doesnt take NO lists. RDJs PR probably assumed a corner had been turned on the drug stories and nobody would bother going there, but this guy did.

Toms solution is easy. Request the studio PR to enforce a NO list. This means s/he must be glued to his side for every interview ready to shut it down should it go south. They MUST get him off the serious publications, the ones less likely to do puff pieces. Why is he promoting King Kong on the Telegraph of all places? Alternatively, get Samuel L or one of the other co-stars to do the prestigous outlets.

Personally, I suspect that these options have been laid out to him but HE insists on continuing on with the prestigous outlets because he isn’t just trying to promote the movie, he wants to promote himself. If I am right, he deserves all the ridicule they are heaping on him.

130 Name: Anon : 2017-03-07 21:45 ID:JdqnTY+R

TL:DR

Prestigious publications like the Telegraph won't interview a star with no go subjects. Second string publications that need the clicks will. But TH wants to be interviewed by the big boys so he takes the risk.

131 Name: Anon. : 2017-03-07 22:30 ID:5mVD0hPE

>>129 'Personally, I suspect that these options have been laid out to him but HE insists on continuing on with the prestigous outlets because he isn’t just trying to promote the movie, he wants to promote himself.'

This sounds like him, exactly like him. Do we think he's risking the broadsheets because he wants to claw back the respect and admiration that they used to have for him? Because he is just desperate enough to try a 'take me seriously' offensive with a Kong movie. He really is.

132 Name: Anon : 2017-03-07 22:40 ID:JdqnTY+R

>>131 Yes, I thought it was very perceptive. Of course verandah lady saw fit to pooh-pooh these sensible remarks (!).

Can he still believe that all publicity is good publicity? I feel he is thinking "thank god I have Kong as any movie that people want to talk about will get me back in the public eye."

I rather think it is the other way around: Shit Island has gained more traction than it might because publications know that Hiddleswift means clicks and "what Tom thought about Hiddleswift" means even more clicks. (I am not saying that that made Tayto worth the collateral damage to his credibility.)

133 Name: Anon. : 2017-03-07 23:13 ID:5mVD0hPE

>>123 The author brings up his fans in the narrative, TH doesn't, so I don't think he's blaming fans. But he might indeed blame us to some extent. Many of us didn't buy it either, and many called him out on it.

Maybe he has to blame someone other than himself just for the sake of his sanity. He fucked up big time, and it's always easier to blame mistakes on others.

134 Name: Heynon : 2017-03-07 23:34 ID:ZlA/bjVC

>>126, >>127 Dlisted seems particularly pointer this time round, especially about Tom's PR (or woeful lack thereof).

>>128 I think this "secondary" approach could also backfire, because some interviewers will want to provoke another outburst to get the clicks. (Look how the discussion changed so quickly from the SI reviews to the Aussie and Telegraph interviews over the last day.)

>>131 It has to hurt that he went so quickly from golden boy of TNM to PR-stunt-ho, especially with pubs like the Guardian. And the Guardian's slash-and-burn review of him in Kong was probably salt in the wound.

>>129 That was a helpful comment on the CB. And that must be another stinger for him, that he doesn't have enough clout to enforce a NO list on his own. Mind you, not that it would have to have a studio PR flack at his side - if the GG video is any indication, TH seems to think he can handle any awkward situation.

>>132 What have really gotten more publicity, from what I've seen in Google results the last few days, are the GQ article and the Wash Post article dissecting the GQ one.

>>133 That's a good point about why he might be putting the blame so heavily on others. He may not even be ready yet to acknowledge to himself, let alone others, how badly he eff'd up (and is continuing to do so). Not that it would help, probably, but where the heck is Luke or TH's US agents?

I think Anon. was right when she said this was probably a group interview where it more unlikely one could oversee questions.

And I think RDJ example is the wrong one, the journalist interviewing RDJ wasn't a cinema or gossip one, but someone that covers politics, grilling people it's his style. RDJ's team claimed that they told him not to do some kind of questions, but he denied ever being said that otherwise he would have refused to do the interview.

Suggestions for this new series: TH's character has to become a night manager again for MI6, so he sends out plenty of applications, but everyone tells him that he doesn't have any recent experience and he's too old and if he would be ok with a zero hour contract.

Or,

there's no TH character, MI6 has a meeting where they decide that infiltrating agents as night managers into five starts hotel is good for intelligence gathering, so they put their men in all the Four Seasons of the globe and OC gets to tour all of them. Crappy plot but great photography! Plus, if they go to BoraBora, we can have a TH's Pine cameo as a connoisseur of the islands.

147 Name: Heynon : 2017-03-08 12:54 ID:ZlA/bjVC

>>136 NY Mag was really hard on TH during TayTo and continues that tradition: "Noted tank top model...."

>>138 Though at least NYM didn't call him a "Golden Glove" winner as the DM just did. (Let's not encourage any pugilistic tendencies Tom may be developing!) Brie's comments on how women and men are treated differently for fashion suits were interesting, I thought.

>>139 I haven't watched all of the MTV video, but thought he did look tired and comparatively subdued. And gun-shy: Tom gets flustered when Josh asks him what he did last night. The bit with Tom reproducing the expression of his Mme. Tussaud's wax figure was funny, though.

I would be interested in TNM 2 if and only if LeCarre wrote every word of the script. And even then, I'm still confused. I love Olivia Coleman, but I'm not so interested in her continuing the story of her character in a sequel as a new Mommy/Spy handler, as she chases other baddies. Jonathan Pine has defeated Roper, and unlike the ending of the book which keeps Jed and Pine together, Tom was quite clear that he didn't know where his character would end up. They're retreading the same water unnecessarily. Just do another LeCarre adaptation (The Patriot would rock) or think like thre Disney film Frozen and 'Let It Go.' Tom would be good in The Spy Who Came In From the Cold, as well.

Also, in this he clearly walks back his "taking most of 2017 off" statement. Says he "took a month or two at Christmas," but doesn't give any details about what's next.

>>159, >>161 It isn't fair for the crew and rest of the cast of SI, certainly. And maybe at this point it isn't fair for him, but at the risk of sounding like my mother, life isn't fair. And at 36, it's time he learned how to handle that a little more smoothly if he's going to stay in the public eye at the level he otherwise seems to want.

I hope for Ragnarok that he, Marvel, and his team figure out how in advance how to deal with any Tayto/predictions about songs on her album questions. I think there may be fewer tayto questions (other than some taking the "it's been just about a year since..." tack), but more song speculation. Maybe his sense of humor will have come back by then.

I post this in fun, but it could be the next tricky issue for TH.

As we know TH is chummy with Ed Sheeran singing his praise to this guy's latest album on the radio, getting invited to his secret concert and bobbing his head along (https://twitter .com/sharontharp/status/838913057975853056).

The day after his secret concert ES paid visit to his dearest friend TS. No, I'm not going to insinuate that she summoned ES to scold him for inviting TH or alternatively to question if TH is still hooked up on her.

It's just that yesterday (or today) Rolling Stones published an interview with ES where he proves to be a complete idiot. And I laughed because this could only happen to TH, complimenting a guy and then it turns out he's a moron.

This is the link to listen to the Heart Breakfast radio interview
http://www.heart.co.uk/london/on-air/aod/?episodeId=efbca9f4-cc0e-4f69-8a71-9ba5cd20ab5f

There's also a video on their website with a chunk of it.
http://www.heart.co.uk/london/on-air/breakfast/watch-tom-hiddleston-on-heart-breakfast/

There's a point where TH is asked if he is single (this is not on the video) and he says yes, absolutely and that no, he doesn't intentionally go out to look for a mate.

>>159 No it isn't fair to the film or him, but it was a predictable consequence. Who knows, maybe in the end he'll be right to get it out of everyone's system now instead of being asked for years as it happens with others TS's ex bfs.

>>166 The testing of the gf is the act of a twat. Of course TS would compare herself to Carole King, she's delusional. Of course ES would call her the most famous woman in the world, even when she's not.

If it's true that ES ghostwrites some of TS's songs, TH may consider this new love of ES self-preservation.

In other news, Yours Truly noted that TH honored IWD with a ribbon. I'm sure he wore it in honor of his mother, sister, niece and their willingness to stroll for the main man in their lives. After all, women are for publicity and legitimizing your fauxmance.

>>170 As a classical music lover, I have no love for bubble gum pop artists like Swift or Sheeran. And no young artists have the right to invoke the names of songwriter poets, like King and Taylor, period. Modern pop is melodically simple, and lyrically banal, so that young MTV kids w/o attention spans can easily consume it at speed. But Sheeran, by all accounts, has a warm and gregarious personality and vivacious social energy that envelops everyone he meets, from Elton John to even Demi Moore. So b/twn Tom's desire to be liked and Ed's affability I'm pretty sure they get along, in truth. Swedish producer Max Martin seems to be the mastermind of all the pop artists now from, Swift, to Timberlake, The Weeknd, Grande, and to Perry. So I think that Tom should befriend Max : )

>>172,156 Looks like it's shaping up to be a fun, exciting, entertaining but somewhat substance-less film: GCI monsters knocking six bells out of each other with questionable characterization and plot. There's a place for that so I don't think TH's reputation or box office pulling power will take a hit. But I do wonder if this is what he signed up for. He said he came onboard before it had a script which suggests he was lured in by words like: leading man, action hero. All good words for a man who wants to increase his star power. But with his usual absence of forethought, he neglected to realize that the leading man of a monster movie is always the monster.

(Here's hoping for a song entitled Pretty Mercenary of My Heart, or Soul Soldier or Love King on TS's next album.)

Its Rotten Tomato rating is a lot better than I feared when I read the Guardian review.

I think the technical movie term is "schlock." There's a place for that in the Hollywood ecosystem - often a very lucrative one. I thought the Avengers wasn't much different. Far too many characters, too much CGI, mostly poor characterisation (save Loki and a lot of his characterisation was assumed from Thor).

I actually think he needs a schlocky success. Money talks and he has had a lot of financial duds recently.

Apparently he has said he's "single and available." (Is there any practical difference for a man in his 30s?!). Couldn't find where.

>>174 haha - "pretty(est) that killed the beast" and song titles!

Well said about if this is what he thought he was signing up for (especially that the monster = the real leading man). This probably won't hurt him professionally, but neither will it give him the boost he may have been expecting. I feel a bit bad for him because he put so much work into his preparation for the role, and always works hard on set.

>>175 When I checked at lunchtime today, both RT and Metacritic numbers were pretty much where they were when the first reviews came out, so that's not too bad. I've seen a couple of articles saying SI's box office this weekend may depend on how much Logan's drops off at this point. They might about tie.

A couple of reviews called this "a B movie with an A movie budget," which I bet sums it up just right.

I asked my husband. He did not consider himself 'available' while we were dating but he said he considered himself 'single' until he proposed. (I'm going to cut him in his sleep.)

I'm sure the Swift hive has heard. Reactions will include:

  1. straight up denial that he ever said it
  2. he's lying so Tayto can keep their love private - those two are all about privacy
  3. the phrase 'single and available' is his signal to TS to send the jet for him - secret holiday time
  4. parsing the fuck out of each word to disprove their actual definitions

>>177, >>179 The "single and available" quote comes from the Heart Breakfast interview (at >>167). It's about about 2:38 in after the tag line game. The host asks 'are you single?' Tom's A: "I am, absolutely, yes sir." Q: 'Single and available?' A (laughing): "Isn't that the whole point of being single?"

This must have been recorded before his "my private life is PRIVATE GODDAMMIT PEOPLE LEAVE ME ALONE" tetchy phase. He's actually laughing. Can't wait to see all the dating proposals on his Twitter!

From some Tumbl anons, TH may have said in the past something like "you're technically single until there's a ring on your finger." So he seems to make the distinction between the two words as well. Be nice if guys could factor in "in a relationship" or at least "currently seeing someone"!

And apparently the "oh they're still secretly dating shippers" on Tumblr were crashing and burning at first, but now may be trying to come up with other interpretations of his words.

Hiddleston on Kimmel. He looks slick in black Gucci. Some awkward singing in spanish w Guillermo. Then a bit dry. Boarding school takes. So odd that I now hope for the best, and cross my fingers that if Tom gets a direct awkward question, then he will answer with PR approved confidence and competence . I asked my Japanese colleague some help to understand when the Japanese premiere for Kong will be, it's on March 15th in Shinjuku, Tokyo. While browsing she also found out that:

"The Japanese premier of "Kong: Skull Island" will be held in mid-March and GACKT, who provides the Japanese voice dubbing for the main character Conrad, will attend!!On that day, cast members Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson will come to Japan for the premier. For the first time, a Western movie will have a red carpet spread down the 120.1 meter long Godzilla Road in Shinjuku, and will greet 1000 Japanese fans!! Will we see GACKT and Tom Hiddleston together...?"
(this was on Gackt's website)

She says that Gackt is a big deal musician there and a heartthrob and there'll probably be a general fangirl meltdown for him at the red carpet. In any case, this is going to be fun.

Interview about Tom's career. They used a similar Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy reference that the Sun did over the summer, in their title for the article. Kind of a retread of Tom's views about art, fame, education, and story telling in general. He side steps the summer spectacle, while the author described the alleged romance as brief and bizarre. Ouch. Bond speculation about any actor besides Craig is a bit silly.

Last night at Kimmel's he did a rehearsed bit where he was singing in Spanish, Kimmel commented his Spanish was so so and asked about other languages he spoke, TH admitted to speak little Spanish and to have a passable French.

>>196 He's a bad Classicist for calling Latin a dead language. It has a dictionary, Tom, not a lexicon.

Unsurprisingly, he's not been completely honest with his language knowledge, no one ever is. I would say I'm 'passable' at Spanish and Italian but both are really just tourist level. When I try to write Italian on a film messageboard I frequent, the others are always like, 'It's okay, we can use English. Really!' In that clip, I believe he says 'parla Italiano pero...' This makes me think he thinks he kinda knows Italian because he studied Latin and knows some Spanish.

I have a question. How much does Kong need to make to be profitable?

The filming budget was around 190-200 mil. I feel like the promotion may reach a quarter of that, maybe more. I have no idea how much a promo push costs but they are pulling out all the stops for this one. It's like cashmere, it just feels expensive.

Captcha: puffazz...TH needs to bring more puffazz to this promo.
