The movie "Densha Otoko" (Train Man) is to be shown in several countries in East Asia, including Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, following sales efforts at the recent Cannes Film Festival. The movie is based on a supposedly true story that played out on the Channel 2 web site, Japan's most popular BBS. It tells of an "otaku" (nerd), played by Yamada Takayuki (21), who comes to the rescue of a woman (Nakatani Miki, 29) being groped on a train. Not knowing how to pursue his newly found love, he turns to the Web for help and advice. The love story was turned into a best-selling book and has the subject of a lot of publicity over the last year, and has publishers scouring the Web looking for the next big hit. The biggest question that remains is whether it's really a true story of innocent love triumphing or just a clever marketing ploy. The movie opens on June 4.

I saw the television show yesterday (downloaded all the episodes) and I cried not only tears of joy, but tears of sadness whenever Densha was let down. We are so similar that it seems like it's the story of my future. Regardless, great drama.

Well, I finally catched up and I have to say...
Episode 8 was sooo over the top... I found it to be too exaggerated it a lot of times. More than usual, I mean.
"The Japanese title (houdai) of American film Napoleon Dynamite will be Bus Otoko (Bus Man.) As Yuki points out, this new title has almost nothing to do with the film itself and 100% to do with the fact that there is a popular Japanese film/television show/internet hoax called Densha Otoko. Funny stuff... especially with all the forum members going insane, convulsing, etc...haha. Overall it's been a great series, despite the fact that I find densha himself rather annoying, and hermes extremely uninteresting. Something has kept me watching though, probably the side characters (densha's friends, the forum members) and such, and just the whole concept is definately something unique. My english it's very bad, but i try to explain to everybody how i feel when i watch Densha Otoko TV Drama... I cry, every moment, every minute, and fell so happy and so sad for Densha and Hermes, for me, this history was the Best jdrama in my life and enjoy with them.
Episode 10 was so ero ero YO at times! I lolled at the pixelated censoring of "adult kiss".
Also, WTF was up with them showing Densha's mysterious mom and the completely weird "Matilda announcement"? Seemed completely gimmick.
Densha's mom is played by Matilda's seiyuu from the Gundam anime a long time ago

Which episode 11 subs are the best? I went with Densha Lovers for 8-10 and then I tried aviness for 11 but it just doesn't seem right. . .

so hey. for someone who has seen the first 8 episodes but not the last three, which subs (aviness, densha-lover or masakun) are the best?
They all have their advantages and errors. For instance, I liked aviness the best as far as translation went, but some of the subs overlap sometimes, timing errors I guess.
IIRC Masakun did the best job with the cultural references and translation overall, but aviness was better with the colloquialisms and speed. I think I have Masakun as the source for my DVDs (gotta love SRT -> DVD sub converters).

Well, that's that. T_T So great! I was emoting along with them in the narration after they meet, and in the graduation scene. I finally saw the Densha second ending/epilogue special. It was a bit dissapointing to see it was mainly a clip show, but seeing what happened with the forum members while offscreen during the series made up for it. That last scene though, when Hermes invites Densha...
This is just an observation based on what little japanese I understand. From what I saw in that trailer, perhaps he meets these girls through a stereotypical mishap that made him look like a perv and then what zany antics follow and what romance might blossom. Or seomthing. Yea.

Actually, -tan is just an honorific suffix, and can be swapped in and out with -san, or others, depending on the situation.
It's not a regular suffix, and not used in normal conversation except by children who can't pronounce -chan. Otherwise it's used as an overly cute affectation for the subject. I wish people wouldn't overuse it so much.
I liked Hermes, the girlfriend of the dude with dreads, and towards the end, even liked Imperial March girl. Although I personally couldn't be bothered to watch an episode to find out her name again.
I actually became bothered enough to find out the actress' name: Shiraishi Miho - and in the show she's known as Jinkama.
I just finished the TV series and found it extremely touching...never had a TV series nearly have me in tears! I wanna watch it all again!

This was the last film I saw at Fantasia before having to head home, and it was kind of a good place to stop. After a steady diet of serial killers, zombies, vampires, and other monsters, a film like "Train Man" supplies a different, but just as vital, fantasy, with the "based on a true story" making the world seem a brighter place.

I just finished watching Densha Otoko, and by finished I don't mean I watched all the episodes, I mean I just couldn't keep watching. I read the original posts, and no matter wether it was a faker or perhaps even several, the movie and the tv-series completely massacered it.

The actress playing Hermes in the film is Nakatani Miki. Supposedly, she got the role just because the "real" Densha said that Hermes look a lot more like her. Now..., Nakatani Miki was 29 when she starred in the film. But when she was younger, her beauty, i dare say, was unparelled. And Misaki-san is going to be 30 next year. Not bad for an obaasan (well, almost an obaasan).

I haven't read the entire thread, so I apologize ahead of time. But has there ever been any sort of update regarding how Densha and Hermes are doing today? With how well this romance has been built up, it would almost be heart breaking to hear if they weren't together anymore.

Densha Otoko is the third Jdorama I've watched. It's pure comedy! I know it's also a romance story but to me it's more funny than anything else. Yamada's two otaku friends, the evil version of Sakurai, and of course Aoyama Saori's good looks are memorable. Some of the skits were so funny my eyes teared and stomach cramped. I mean, c'mon, RC cars delivering diamond rings in an elaborate scheme to woo a woman's affection? Now THAT is funny. You could make a spoof jewelry store commercial out of it. The lighthouse skit was my favorite scene in the TV series.

I'm still of the opinion that the original posts are a far better read/watch than any of the silly, dramaticized fairy-tale stories as seen in the manga/dorama/film. It's just cool seeing 2chers getting excited about stuff like this. I think there's a much better adaptation of 2ch life and its residents yet to be made from a story like this.

The crazy theories about the 2ch owners coming up with the story to pay off lawsuit fines seems much less credible than the story in the posts themselves. They're great posts, and there's no denying the community enthusiasm behind the man. It could be just elaborate fiction he decided to write in a forum instead of a magazine article, but if you notice, it's kind of a boring story. There's no real conflict. It has a real anticlimactic ending that's satisfying because it's so authentic and relatable.
it seems plausible that it actually happened,
just remember as stories get passed on though, details always change, but the truth to the story hopefully remains in tact
For a while now I have seen Densha Otoko the movie and TV series about 3 times each. It's really a story to praise for such beauty and originality. Absolutely the number 1 on my list for Japanese Drama/Comedy/Romance.

Fun film. I especially laughed when they were having tea and he eats the sugar as if it were candy, then proceeds to put about 5 of them in a tiny cup of tea.
After watching the drama, I'll never look at an otaku the same way ever again... actually i think i'm turning into one

I just started watching the first episode of the series tonight.
It's hilarious. I love it.
My favourite scene of the series is when all of the 2ch residents are drinking Benoist tea, and they keep making small noises like 'hermes' and 'densha'. It actually made me laugh out loud.

I too loved the book and the TV drama.
The movie was good, but to be honest the Drama was better. Because of the length of the series it had alot more time to play the story out and, while some may argue that the dramatization was awful, it also allowed them to include those quirky comedy moments that made the show so memorable. (With the help of the new characters Jinkama and Kazuya. There's only so much the residents could provide.)

I liked the movie more than the TV show. Even though the woman felt a bit flat/unemotional in the movie, the characters were all around more believable I felt.

Has anyone else noticed that the story is a remake (in real life) of the 1924 movie "Girl Shy", and that in the Fuji drama Ito and Ito match Harold Lloyd and Jobyna Ralston in character, mannerism, and --- no less -- in FACE?
