I've been watching Hollywood and Hongkong movies all my life and now I want to try French movies. Is there any epic/classic films that you consider representative of what I can expect from French movies?
La cité des enfants perdus
Delicatessen (both by Caro & Jeunet, weird atmosphere, great stories)
Last Year at Marienbad
Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
A Band Apart
Man Bites Dog
is 8 1/2 italian?
I'm a fan of Amélie it's confusing but has some nice cinematography.
Not classic, nor epic, but I like the movie "The Man who loved women". Saw the original in French class at school years ago. The american remake sounds significantly inferior ಠ_ಠ
I like how Persepolis hasn't been mentioned yet.
La Mome (or "La vie en Rose")
