so exactly how racist is Japan? how do different races such as koreans, chinese, flips, indians and blacks get treated?

i'm considering going to a university there and I wonder if I'll get pissed upon for being a dirty chinese.

2 Name: Citizen : 2007-08-13 15:10 ID:HpwrDTZO

I don't think anyone would really notice if you speak the language well.

3 Name: Citizen : 2007-08-13 17:40 ID:yMdqn+s7

I don't think anyone would piss on you either.

I don't know how much more racist Japan is than say... Norway.
Both are very civilized, well-managed, socially conscious democratic nations with a modest amount of immigrants.

Which is to say that there are the blatant racists on the fringe, and the majority of people don't really care. Sounds like most of the world to me.

Japan has a mono-ethnic national identity; whether that's racist or not is up for debate.
China, on the other hand has a multi-ethnic national identity
This has a large part to do with geography, of course.

There are MANY Chinese studying in Japan right now, more than ever. Japanese schools are very welcoming to foreigners because many of them have a hard time filling up on students with the declining population. There should be a very active body of foreign students from China, Korea, and elsewhere.

They're not white so they are not racist.

7 Name: Citizen : 2007-08-14 15:02 ID:NTXNmKES

I don't think it's a problem so long as you're in a major city. The older generations may be more patriotic and racist but they are polite so they won't tell you in the face.

8 Name: Citizen : 2007-08-14 20:42 ID:9JMiAV7j

If I ever met an old Japanese racist, I would want to be a nice gaijin to prove whatever stereotypes he/she has wrong.
When you consider some of the stupid/rude things gaijin do when they come to Japan, I don't blame the conservatives for not wanting gaijin in their neighborhoods, biggoted prejudice though it might be. If I were them I wouldn't want such fucktards running around my streets either.
So be a polite gaijin everyone.

I suspect even being a "nice gaijin" wouldn't cut it, due to nonverbal social cues that are beyond your knowledge. For instance, maintaining prolonged eye contact generally makes a Japanese person uncomfortable; pouring soy sauce on your rice at a meal would be a blatant insult to the rice god; things like that. I may be completely wrong about those two examples, but that just goes to show, doesn't it?

There are a huge number of ways you can offend somebody simply by not being familiar enough with the subtleties of their culture, especially when they want to be offended and to resent you.

15 Name: Citizen : 2007-08-20 20:43 ID:0PgUNId4

>>14

True, I personally find I can't maintain eye contact with people for longer than a few seconds, so I wouldn't want to do that with anybody either. And most rice tastes better plain, besides soy-sauce breaks up the rice clumps so you can't even pick 'em up with your chopsticks afterwards.

Ah. You know by being a dick, you're acting just as embarrassing, if not moreso, then the Japan-loving weeaboos you probably hate? I know that lovely feeling of superiority you get when you talk down to people and say, "oh, you don't get it. Japan just isn't LIKE THAT. I'm not gonna explain, though. You lowly weeaboos don't deserve my time," but seriously, there are better ways your huge ego and condescending attitude can be put to use. Might I suggest indie rock?

What about other ethnicities, if not Chinese.

I've read about the Japanese people, especially the children, being very impressionable when it comes to foreigners. For example, I've read the case in particular of a certain black wrestler who has become quite famous there and as such people there see all black foreigners as him.

Any truth in this? What about Hispanic peoples in Japan? I imagine there aren't that many so I speculate that they have no opinion on them. However, their view on Hispanics might be shaped by their view on the Brazilian-Japanese and others from South America that are returning back to Japan.

With all due respect 14, you don't have a clue what you're talking about. Foreigners in Japan are given a lot of latitude. Japanese are mostly pretty a nice and an interest in their language and culture will go a long way. Owari.

21 Name: Citizen : 2007-09-02 05:37 ID:R6LdNbGO

This topic is stupid. An intelligent Japanese person would not exhibit signs of racism. The other people are not worth dealing with anyways.

My post was in reply to this.
I did not mean to imply that all Japanese are racist.

Did I see a KKK there? NO.
Did I see a Hal Turner there? NO.
Did I see a Pro Race Group over there? Maybe.
But did I see a gajin fag suing over places that didn't allow him to come in for legitimate reasons? YAH.

My point is, THERE ARE HARDLY ANY RACISM THERE. Just exploitive bastards that need to be shot.

What "legitimate" reasons? You're not Japanese, you can't enter or use these services? You're not Japanese, I'm scared of you, you can't enter or use these services? You're not Japanese, I can't deal with you, you can't enter or use these services?

Probably not. Racism against black people in the US is very culturally ingrained. There's a deep societal rift that has yet to heal there. Black people in Japan are maybe a little exotic, but not much more than other gaijin, and the same stereotypes apply in most cases. You'd be a gaijin first and a black person second, which might be a big advantage.

the absence of people overtly pushing racism can also being indicative of systemic racism. i.e. it's already there so why advocate it?

How about Racism in Korea?
Koreans are known to actually point fingers at black-skinned people in public places, and have derogatory terms for them.
It's no wonder they were targeted by the blacks in the LA riots in 1992.

LA is in Korea? Has The Big OneĀ© finally happened?

Yes, Korea is 'racist' too. This isn't ever argued however due to the lower concentration of Korean culture idolaters.

chinese immigrants cause a good chunk of the murders in japan among other crimes. there's negative connotation against the chinese immigrants for that.

Korea is one of the most racist countries in the developed world.

I can understand that they have an inflated sense of nationalism after what the Japanese did to them not so long ago, but you should hear some of the things they teach their children.

Nationalism doesn't have to involve hatred for other nationalities.

They should also realise that other countries have had much harder times than them and they don't constantly cry about it.

Why are they demanding apologies from innocent people? I don't expect apologies from all German people because most of them did not commit those atrocities.

Sorry for rambling...

Yeah, Japanese hate Black people. All races are welcome in Japoan except for Blacks. If you are not Black, you will be welcomed with open arms (and legs). It's no wonder latrinos and japs mix so much, given then fact that both hate Blacks.

I've come to the conclusion, that given the current status of racism, biggotry, and racial conflict in the world, Japan isn't any more racist than your average European nation, and probably less so than many other countries, including the USA.

Korean are most hated in Japan.
Chinese are secondly avoided.

55 Name: Citizen : 2007-12-07 21:49 ID:RpW8+v4+

Aside from the serious problems between Japan - South Korea and Japan - China, racism really isn't that prevelant in Japan. There may be some kind of trendy "racism" theme among the youth culture -- such as people cosplaying Nazis -- but that's just a smaller part of a complex identity issue going on.

56 Name: Citizen : 2007-12-07 21:51 ID:RpW8+v4+

"there are 'women only car' in japanese train." - I believe that's actually a safety precaution due to sexual perversion. You can't even walk down the street in a mini-skirt without being harassed.

On the contrary, it's become easier. If a woman is on the non-women-only car, it means she is available for groping.
