I was about to post in the primes thread but the preview turned it into a bunch of chinese characters and question marks. The captcha, appropriately, was fughly. Ultimately though, I decided not to go through with it as 381 is not prime so I couldn't explain why it looked so fucked-up.

>>42
I would:
1) kill all major figures of Abrahamic religions
2) sponsor Hitler's tuition in arts and praise his skills even if I had to lie
3) shot Lenin before the revolution (and shaved Stalin)
4) tell Nicola Tesla all that Edison-was-a-templar stuff from Assassin's Creed.

I remember I watched a playthrough of Rule of Rose a while back and, at the ending, thought it quite poignant, but wasn't particularly moved beyond that. I just now finished playing it myself, and the ending had me crying more than I've cried in years; full on sobbing, tears streaming down my cheeks and everything. I still feel somewhat tender.

If anyone wants to try playing it themselves, tell me so. I can help with configuring the emulator and so on (it isn't easy).

46 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-7682 22:49

So I searched something that turned up an old thread right here on DQN that I was perusing, and saw this:

>kanji for "woman" = 女
>kanji for "noisy" = 姦
>A ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. I see what you did there, Japan.

But according to Google Translate, 姦 = "condom".

47 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-7683 17:49

>>46
姦 technically means cunning and wickedness, but it's only really used in compounds:
姦婦 adulteress
姦淫 fornication
姦通 adulterous affair
強姦 rape

It appears to also be slang for condom, probably because it's pronounced "kan".

48 Name: >>47 : 1993-09-7683 17:53

>>47
(Addendum: 姦しい (やかましい or かしましい) does mean noisy, but that word is almost always just written in hiragana.)

It baffles me just how much of a fool I am for not realizing this sooner.

Plus the kit I'm eyeing includes 55-200 VR lens that I also wanted, and just for a little more than D5200 with only one lens. It also has 'stupid newbie' (guide) mode that will make all the nice photos for me.

I do remember back when MUDs were still a thing that a fair number of people did, I went around trying various ones and at one point was checking out one that was stationed in Estonia (with all the game text in English however). As I was exploring a bit, the conversation on the chat channel was going something like this:
Couple of guys: <words in Estonian> fuck <more words in Estonian> fuck <etc>
Me: <asks question about the game in English>
Admin: Speak English guys, we have a visitor.
One of the guys: Fuck off, this is Estonian MUD, not for foreigner!
Admin: You will speak the fucking English or you will fucking shut up.
<after some time, it becomes clear that the "fucking shut up" option had been taken>

I didn't go back there.

Illness is never fun, but I have been enjoying my bizarre and vivid fever dreams. My personal favourite was the one where a huge white butterfly (some sort of Pieridae?) appeared out of nowhere and tried to climb into my left eye. It got caught on my glasses, and I was trying to reason with it, saying "No, butterfly, my eye is not a good place for you to be. There is nothing you want in my eye." But gosh darn, that was one determined butterfly. In the end, I managed to take my glasses off very slowly, with the butterfly still perched on the lens. I don't really remember what happened after that.

The kind that taps every fucking keystroke so loud you can make out each one individually from across the library and you can tell how many lines the typer has written because they really bang on the Enter key. Everyone is just standing around awkwardly or muttering nervously to one another. Eventually people start getting hungry, or tired, or really need the toilet, so they leave; at the same time, more and more people keep trickling in, and they always ask the people who were there before them what's going on and why they're there, without getting any meaningful answer.

Starting a blog and putting up examples of your writing can also be a good idea. You can try to attract clients or make money through pay-per-click ad setups like Google Adsense. The only problem with those deals is that you have to get like 100,000 hits to make anywhere near a decent amount. I see people getting all excited over getting a $30 check from Google for the month. I can't even pay my electric bill with that. The fact is there are plenty of shekels to be had in online writing, but they take a lot of work to get your hands on. If you have a strong handle on SEO, though, it could work out for you.

If you're looking at writing for magazines, I don't know anything about that. It probably helps to have a really strong online presence first.

I think a couple of his short stories (and 1Q84) have female protagonists, but yeah, I know what you mean. Anyway, which of his books are you reading? A Wild Sheep Chase and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World are my favourites.

306 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-7727 18:43

>>305 I read A Wild Sheep Chase and liked it. I started The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles but haven't gotten back to it because it's a bit much to follow along with all the studying I have to do. Right now I'm reading some of his short stories in a collection called The Elephant Vanishes. All good stuff.

I think I connect better with Murakami's work because I see some of myself in his protagonists. That probably isn't such a great thing.

While Murakami's always maintained that fame is something he's not striving for I think he's embraced it quite readily.
1Q84 was one of the more mass-market books he's produced: surreal enough to entice but not enough to alienate, and with enough Western influence to appeal to his fans.

I don't think he's 'sold out'; rather, I think he's changing his style, pointing his intense emotional gaze outwards rather than inwards.

However Tsukuru Tazaki is just plain crap, and I'm disappointed in him.

I read a creepy comment on an ASMR video so I clicked the link to the guy's Youtube profile so I could see what other kinds of things he'd been up to. Just looking for red flags, because I'm bored, can't sleep, and I'm fascinated with weird people.
Turns out he hasn't uploaded anything at all, but he likes ASMR videos. Nothing but ASMR videos. No music. No funny videos. No Let's Plays. No viral "fail" videos. No anything. He only "likes" ASMR videos on Youtube. Nothing else at all.
His "Discussion" section on his profile showed a comment from an ASMR video uploader thanking him for his comment. Apparently he leaves lots of these long-winded, creepy comments about how much he adores "ASMRtists" (people who make ASMR recordings).
So this guy really, really likes ASMR. I kind of like ASMR, but this guy loves it. Not in a healthy way. In an I-feel-uncomfortable-looking-at-this-guy's-red-flag-filled-profile kind of way.
I did some more investigation. He had a link to a blog. I clicked it.
So many giant walls of text, one of which was about divorce.
I didn't even read it all. It was just so incoherent and pointlessly long.
But I did realize something.
This guy didn't watch ASMR videos for relaxation.
He wanted to simulate pillow talk.
He missed his wife.
He probably couldn't take being alone anymore. Divorce must be tough.
I wonder if he wears headphones when he goes to sleep.
Maybe he starts up an ASMR video and listens to it in bed, pretending it's his wife.
Maybe he pretends that he isn't divorced.
I feel so sad for this guy.

Re: 493
Approximately 358,400 of them according to the report on the status bar. How accurate that actually is, fuck if I know. Anyway you're missing out. I think the person that got it most aptly was the one that said BitTorrent is good for new/mainstream stuff, while eMule is better for old/obscure stuff but you wait longer to download. It's certainly the best oldschool filesharing thing out of any that I know of; Gnutella is full of fakes and spam these days, Gnutella2 was only ever really supported by Shareaza and we all know Shareaza kind of sucks, IRC has its diehards but you have to be in the know to get to the good channels, and some people swear by Usenet but paying for server access to pirate stuff seems like defeating the purpose and getting things as a godzillion split up .rar pieces is retarded.

As an aside, I'm still kind of astounded that BitTorrent did as well as it has. I remember thinking when it first came out "So we're going to trade P2P networking for centralization on an openly displayed website that acts as a single point of failure to be taken down? That's like the stupidest thing ever." I guess the "hey bro we only index these files, not distribute them" defense works, somehow, most of the time.

The universe is so vast that it's likely that life exists elsewhere. However, because we haven't been contacted yet, it's likely that other forms of life aren't as advanced as we are. We have done some basic space travel and we're getting better at it all the time, despite budget cuts to NASA. SpaceX is showing we don't need government space programs to get to outer space.

People have always assumed that aliens will invade us. But in all likelihood, WE will be the invaders. WE will be the ones doing anal probes on other planets.

WE are the aliens. WE are the people who will have flying saucers.

I've just given up entirely on trying to have privacy in the digital realm.
There are backdoors in encryption, backdoors in open source software, backdoors in systemd, backdoors in proprietary software, backdoors or workarounds in everything.
I'm just going to give up. I'm going to live my life assuming that someone can and is monitoring me. Maybe not personally, but with software that analyzes what I'm doing with massive storage in the Utah Data Center and advanced algorithms determining what my data means and what to do with it.
The dystopian future is here to stay and it'll never get better.
At least I can hope for a nuclear winter.
Even though things are bad and they'll never get better, at least I can hope for destruction. The world is shit. It no longer deserves to exist.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you're actually trying to convey your opinion, not just trying to get a rise out of someone.

First of all, if you really think moé denpa is somehow not "true" denpa, I'd invite you to take a look at the most recent seasonal release list, noting just how much of it is the over-the-top saccharine sort - and how little has anything to do with Nanahira. Secondly, though I suppose it is a matter of opinion, and it's certainly true that not everything she's been a part of has been a masterpiece, I disagree that her works are "generic moe-pop". To give a few counterexamples: A杯, Ready Go!, Existence.

And frankly, if you really are so fond of it, you should be well aware that denpa is not a genre.

If you don't like Nanahira's work, or even her as a person, that's absolutely fine; I don't mind. Similarly, if you feel so strongly that you're going to be rude about it, that's fine too. But you're still just plain wrong.

>I'd invite you to take a look at the most recent seasonal release list, noting just how much of it is the over-the-top saccharine sort

That's because at some point "denpa" became interchangeable with "over-the-top saccharine moe pop". Denpasong is not just EDM for lolicons, it's about the feeling of dissociation and jiltedness where everything is cockeyed and upside-down but you can't help but to like it and even embrace it. It's supposed to feel like that same kind of bipolar oddly comfortable uncomfortableness like you just drank way too much cough syrup.

The problem with a lot of alternative image boards is that once they get like 5+ regular users, they start circlejerking (usually in IRC, or occasionally with tripcodes) and then ban new people who don't agree with everything they do.

And then they wonder why they aren't popular.

If you ban new people, and make it clear that you don't like new people, you're not going to get new people.

Watch an AMV with its audio muted and put on a different song. Compare your experience of the video and editing with the two different tracks.
If you can't really tell the difference between the two, it means the AMV was poorly put together, just putting a bunch of semi-random or just poorly chosen clips on top of music that doesn't fit too well.
A good AMV makes you think "yeah, that clip makes sense for this part of the song, and this song definitely fits the mood."

So, what does the recent history of Ukraine teach us?

If you're president of a country on a brink of economic recession and your oldest and closest ally offers you some cash just for keeping a smile – when some protest movement materialises out of nowhere and bears clear resemblance (and involves the same people) to a similar event from a few years ago – you shoot them. You find their financiers and you assassinate them with no regard for their social standing.

You don't need to kill a lot – just a few dozen: the leaders and some of the most stuck-up "social activists". Arrest the rest for background checks and they'll admit that they were misled.

Thus you avoid: losing your power, a costly war, (un)necessary annexations of your territory, an economic crisis, a political turmoil, the deepest embarrassment to your ally who cares.

Remember: you can cry about your national identity all you want – but for the rest of the world you will be just this: a slav.

Tune up next week for an exciting episode of: cheap rouble or why black president Obamer doesn't want you to get property on this beautiful peninsula resort of Crimea. (No, I'm done)

Well, if you take the Kievan Rus, disregard some Lithuanians and Poles, and then count Russian Empire and USSR, "oldest" is rather justified.

Also, Ukrainian SSR was considered the westernmost part of the Soviet Union, it had high economic significance. The latter explains numerous important factories, power plants, research institutes, etc that were located there. The former is a reason to have better equipped military. I suppose that could count for "closest".

By contrast, Warsaw Pact countries were regarded as "Europe", "the West". Ironically, the West thought the same and (after The Fall) threw their filthy dollars at Poland, whilst Russia and other ex-SSRs had to struggle mostly on their own.

Biological sex is the chromosome pair you're born with. Gender is the various characteristics of masculinity and femininity. This leads to special genderfluid snowflakes on tumblr who whine about male and female being the only two choices. People have a mix of both masculine and feminine characteristics, but who gives a shit? If everybody would just stop caring about non-biological gender nobody would have anything to complain about. Hence my post.

I know what you mean. I remember long ago DQN went through a rocky period when a certain obscure Touhou character impersonator became a regular poster, but that problem mercifully solved itself given time. I've been telling myself that SAoVQ is in a similar situation, and that, besides, quality of discussion in a community naturally waxes and wanes, but I really am starting to wonder.

I haven't entirely lost hope though, and nor should you. It's worth taking a look through our own archives to remind us of our humble origins, and worth reading some of the older threads on SAoVQ to see what wonders they once created as the norm. I'm no longer convinced SAoVQ can solve its own problems, but if it were offered a clean slate - if, for instance, it went down for an extended period of time then was brought back online once all but the most dedicated had given up on it - I think it could return to its former glory.

This is no empty promise: you should remember that the current posters make low quality posts simply because they find it enjoyable; they have no emotional investment in the website or community, so however vocal they may be they should be easily lost. Furthermore, there is a sense of inertia in post quality; a single insightful post in a terrible discussion is easily overlooked and drowned out, as is a single poor post in an otherwise great thread. If SAoVQ were to start over, and start well, it should easily rise from the ashes.

>>923
What would be objective criteria to measure quality of a board?

Surely, a good grammar of its inhabitants (or even a courtesy of holding "Shift" for a moment and pressing "." key occasionally) makes posts more readable.

Perhaps following the example of radio operators and avoiding religion, politics, sex, business and ethnicity would make conversations mostly inoffensive. But where is the fun in that? Ham operators estimate each others sound quality and talk about weather and antennas... a bit of small talk if they know each other personally. It's a balance between dull politeness and dull offensiveness. I wouldn't expect a level of wit comparable to, say, Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett from an average board-goer. The mindset that strives for "fun on the go", that chooses a quick pun, an offensive jab over a well-thought response, a smirk over a smile is at least partly to blame on the media that constantly regurgitate these topics.

How important are some board's traditions? Reading archives can be really fun, but would an attempt of emulating the fragmentary brilliance of past to be entertaining? Certainly, some aspects are important for keeping things comfortable for both new and old users.

But if "SAoVQ went to shit", yet the majority of its occupants are happy and rolling with it... did it really? Or did you outgrow it, did you lose the sense of belonging there? Though it might be merely a single unfortunate link that attracted some curious posters.

At first, Who /*/ here'' was a semi-memetic way of asking if people on a certain site or board browsed another board, but then it became Who /keyword or adjective/ here'' because catchphrases evolve and are used for different things over time.
``Who /sad/ here'' really means "Anyone else here sad? I want to find out if I can relate to the people on this board."

It's an interesting point, actually. Surely, supreme leaders of DPRK come from a single family, but if the rest of its governing structure follows USSR's "soviets" then it's rather democratic.

People there could participate in the political system through various public organisations and unions ranging from local to "central". Lower tiers could "elect" their activists to higher ones. This article probably explains it much better: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_democracy

So, it was possible to work your way through the system to the top, but you would probably have to be a giant backstabbing douche to accomplish this. But isn't politics just like this everywhere?

Watching a Youtube-famous guy play some game you never heard of, and seeing in it some throwaway graphics from an abandoned project that you slapped up on OpenGameArt a couple years ago is kind of a weird feeling.

I'm going to die sad, unloved, unaccomplished, and alone. On my death bed I will be filled with regret, thinking of all the things I wanted to do but never did. I'll think of all the people I could have befriended if only I wasn't an awkward and anxious loser.
Happy new year! Maybe this year will be different. Hahahahaha yeah right.

Sometimes I worry that everyone else is hyper-intelligent, but they just hide it because they're too modest. And I'm just completely retarded and don't realize it. It's like when mentally challenged people in special education get gold stars and praise from their teachers for doing a good job. They think they're smart and performing well. They have no idea that they're retarded. I worry that I'm like that.

998 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-7792 23:35
