Are clothes too revealing these days? (65)

1 Name: Anonymous Stylist : 2007-11-09 00:13 ID:wtNAO5Kf

It seems to me these days that skirts are so short, shirts so low, thongs are popping out everywhere. Not just in the young girls too, it's everybody! I couldn't believe some of the underwear I found in my daughter's drawers, and the clothing in her closet. And when she goes to school I often think, "Is she allowed to wear that!?". Am I just an old fogey who doesn't know about fashion, or is this really in bad taste?

Stylize me, /fashion/.

We're all pedophiles. We just try to surpress this by making children dress in an unappealing manner. Now that this trend is reversing, we're all freaking out. The whole pedophile witchunt going on today is because we're all realizing we're pedophiles and don't want to talk about it.

Guys, quit arguing. >>20 was right, guys in particular are tuned to go for the youngest girls possible, at least sexually. Emotionally it's a different story, but the purpose of life is to reproduce, not to play checkers together and talk about politics.

This argument debunks itself. If we're talking about evolutionary psychology (which I personally disagree with), we're going to talk about men seeking out the sexual partner most fit for their evolutionary needs. You state that men seek out the youngest possible partner; what we can assume from this statement is that you suggest men look for a partner they can breed with most often, and are most likely not already with another mate. However, we must consider another aspect to human mating choices: childrearing. If humans are by nature monogamous creatures, we live as a family unit; two mating partners raise their offspring cooperatively. By examining past societal trends, we can see that the female partner generally bears the brunt of this task. However, considering a younger child - how could a child know how to, or even have the responsibility to, raise another child? Offspring therefore would be more likely to die in the hands of a younger partner. Continually reproducing with a young partner to have a high rate of mortality of the children is inefficient. Aside from this specific task, other aspects that we have learned to seek out in mates (and yes, an emotionally stimulating partner IS one of them) could not be accomplished by a younger partner; mostly due to lack of maturity or physical frailness. Therefore, considering that menopause hits for most women around 45 - 50, under optimum conditions, men would looks for a partner around 25, young enough to have a multitude of children, and old enough to properly raise them. In past times this number may have been skewed slightly lower due to environmental factors, but recent studies have shown that the onset and closure of mental and physical development begin and end later than in the past.

What we can conclude is that pedophilia and ephebophilia are neither natural nor optimum sexual preferences. Stop deluding yourselves.

I think it's somewhat due to media saturation. Today's 7-year old wants to emulate pop stars. And Pop stars dress like whores, to put it bluntly. So when a kid hears a song on the radio, and maybe sees the show (via MTV or VH1) they see a woman wearing very little clothing. So they decide that's the "cool" way to dress. They whine and moan about having to wear "uncool" cloths, so that Mommy buys at Gap kids.

One more reason to not own a TV.

31 Name: Anonymous Stylist : 2007-12-15 13:29 ID:Y2Ea/ySj

It's modern culture. Western society [well, all societies i can think of] favours those who conform to it's culture, and the culture dictates that revealing clothing be worn.
The solution? Reject the bad points of the culture.

I miss the society where knee length skirts were the only socially acceptable dress for girls, it is more feminine, and more classy than what is worn nowadays.

36 Name: Anonymous Stylist : 2007-12-21 21:25 ID:Pv6qDRdj

I think in general the changes in female fashion are indicators of the way in which our society is heading, skirts are slowly going out of style, except as a means (with really short cuts) to expose the underwear more often, this is because women are no longer comfortable with the responsibility of being a woman following the sexual revolution, they don't want to deal with the consequences of wearing skirts and dresses, be they behavioral, thermal, or merely symbolic.

At the same time, and also because of the sexual revolution women find that the role of clothes as a means of maintaining modesty to be less important than looking sexy.

Men of course, simple animals that most of them are have merely adapted, leaving moefags like me who enjoy skirts and dresses, and actually hold the 16th century up as an example of a good period for that out in the cold. I have no need of clothing that is easy to rip off of my woman because I don't engage in promiscuous sexual activity, and am patient enough to slowly disrobe her to full nudity before having sex.

(note that I do not like the style of dress in the 19th century, because after a certain point you cant see the woman under all that lace.)

> By examining past societal trends, we can see that the female partner generally bears the brunt of this task.

I don't know about other countries, but I do know that this wasn't true in Japan, at least. Until Western influences came in, Japanese households had males in charge of raising the children. Women really were just for childbearing; sometimes a woman would be brought in to a family 'produce' a male heir, if the main wife wasn't cutting it, but then sent away afterwards (see The Life of Oharu).

That said, I agree with you. There are so many factors involved in choosing a mate, and the histories of all our societies are so diverse and complex, there is no basis on which one can argue that every man is naturally a pedophile at heart. Historically, marriages happened in the teenage years, but there are so many other factors to account for this, such as a lower life expectancy rate, and a much shorter education (once you learned how to farm, you knew all you needed to know.) In other words, you can't base our current society on past values or social structures. We live in a different world now, one where teenage or preteenage girls are unprepared to be wives. They need to finish growing.

"average" women can look hot in regular clothing but not in skimpy clothing. I would prefer to go into a bar and see that every woman has a sense of style/fashion without feeling the need to show as much flesh as possible.

The real problem is not just girls wearing more-revealing type clothing... it's the kind of girls doing it.

If a girl has a fit, slim body and can wear something ('slutty' or not) and make it LOOK GOOD, then it's not really that big of a deal because she has something to show off, at least.

It's those who are of average or larger build that try to wear skimpy clothes. It just looks awful. I can't tell you how often I walk around my campus and see the larger-shaped girls wearing shirts that... excuse me for this... basically show their gut sticking out. Girls need to understand what shape their body is in and whether certain types of (slutty) clothes are really suitable for them.

As for the slutty clothes themselves... well, I'm not a fan (I am a girl, btw) but since we can't really do anything about it, I just ignore it. I mean, there are girls who will walk around campus in their skimpy little bikinis on hot days to lay out, which really annoys me to no end, but whatever.

well said

getting back to the point, yes a HUGE chunk of teenage girls dress slutty as hell. it gets really annoying, cause some people may not be slutty, but they think that slutty=normal. that is a problem. but many do it because, as people have said, it makes them feel better when they might not feel good about themselves, and they want attention... this slutty clothing gets attention, but not a good kind... girls show off every scrap of skin they have, and wear tight, very tight clothes that make the breasts stick out... a lot....

should it be normal to see that EVERYWHERE we go?

55 Name: Anonymous Stylist : 2009-09-10 23:44 ID:Y50JvboV

I don't really think girls are to fault with what they wear. When you go to a clothing store of any kind, the majority of clothes avaliable are normally very showy with deep necks that could just about reach the navel.

Its just the fact that there aren't many options out there to turn to besides stuffily, out of date clothes from forty years ago to the new 'too revealing' clothes of today. Once one company started to make the revealing trend, just about every other one followed and its hard to find anything tastefully fashionable when there aren't many options.
