It was the service solution to "People tend to pirate games, why?", and for many reasons, it was the service issue of "Good luck finding any PC game in the store that wasn't shovelware, sims or Blizzard shit", it was to PC games what iTunes was to music, a more convenient way of getting shit that was more honest and actually legitimate.
Honestly, I'd rather have steam exist instead of have a dark age of the PC being first class hardware but third class service and game support (entire games, sometimes franchises and genres being absent from PC, even when they were on there previously, see Midtown Madness series going from PC exclusive to ending up Xbox exclusive for no reason).
