The Neo Geo is the greatest 16 bit machine of all time. From early titles like Magician Lord to the late era triumphs in pushing sprites and pre-rendered CG, Pulstar and Blazing Star shmups, the Neo was king. I remember the days when the home console with $200+ carts was spoken of in hushed tones of awe among kids who had to be content with an NES.
The only down side was the proliferation of fighters on the Neo. Shit, I like SF2 style games as much as anyone, but the Neo could have used a bit more stuff like Metal Slug.
It's a shame what the classic game price bubble has done to Neo cart prices-fucking insane.
i'm inclined to agree. i never could afford a neo geo. it wasn't until i picked up a jaguar many years later that i felt like i had a decent console.
the neo geo stands well even today.
I wouldn't call the amount of fighters on the Neo Geo a downside, especially since most of these were SNK fighters, only Capcom came close.

Still it would have been nice if they could have squeezed Magician Lord 2 in there somewhere. ML is a beautiful platformer, with atmosphere forever and a sequel was rumored. First played that game on a 2 slot MVS cab in one of those tiny Walmart arcades back in the late 90s - my first time playing a game on legendary N E O ⚫ G E O hardware - and the lush parallax of the first stage and everything is a cool memory.

lol
Please check Neo Drift Out, now forgotten 2d racing game with a helicopter view. It is a lot of fun.

The price was high because the Neo Geo games use a lot of memory, and memory was freakishly cheap back then.
my friends don't even know what a neo geo is. theyre really missing out on a great console. whats your guys favorite game on the system, mine is rondo of blood
Fuck I'm a retard rondo is on turbografx
God, Metal Slug AES is a five figure game now.

The market has effectively priced out everyone. I can't even see a die hard forking over that kind of money.
There's a Neo Geo cabinet at my local retro-game arcade. I play bubble bobble on it during the breaks I take from DDR Extreme. Some of the sound is messed up on it though, random cracks/hisses. Must be an emulator, especially so since you can select a game out of many other games.
I have a NEO GEO one slot MVS PCB in my room that I have hooked up to a Professional Trinitron via a JAMMA supergun, it's definitely fun to play Metal Slug X and most of the popular MVS games are still reasonably priced on Ebay, it's just the more obscure and niche titles that are pricy on the MVS. Of course, if you don't want to spend too much on games, you could get that one cheap multicart.

Get an MVS circuit board or one of those MVS cartridge adaptors for your AES, then enjoy getting cool titles like Metal Slug series for between 50 and 100 USD.
If you don't mind long ass loading times, you could get a NEO GEO CD and enjoy cheaper games on CD format. Also you there's no lock out or region lock on the NG CD (or even the AES or MVS), so you can play imports and even "backups" on the CD console
