I think they are very fun.
they are ok tbh
I played them back when I was a stupid kid. I still like them, but I don't think they're much good. Pretty unique, and charming to a point, but also a mess.
I liked them. I would say all the butt rock in the soundtracks was pretty influential on the music I hear in my head.
I would not say they are great. Or good, even. But definitely alright, with no real substitutes that truly surpass them. They scratch some oddly specific itches, and if you have a good imagination, they could be very inspirational because IMHO gaming took a sharp turn to the overly samey side not too long after that. But fair warning, they're from before devs really gave up on "intelligent camera" in 3D games, so not only is it frustrating, it's to an extent that was considered frustrating when the DC was still kicking.
One great feature in them is recapping the story when you start the game up again. I think that really helps you remember the story long-term as well as jog your memory on what you wanted to do next. More games should do this (unobtrusively, of course). A lot of people who are game devs today grew up on Pokemon entries that did this, yet I don't see them putting features like this in. Ah well.
Early modern Sonic is pretty cool and has a nice late 90s-early 00s rock aesthetic. It's kind of funny how the internet hates these games now but not even half a decade ago they were extremely popular and even overrated. Kind of reminds me of the time where games like Zelda 2 and Majora's Mask were once universally hated, but now they're considered beloved classics.
Apparently adventurefags are "rising up" on the interbuttz for the past few days since one of the popular jontron ripoff youtubers that made the game unpopular by shitting on it via youtube got outed as a pedophile/cheater, so everyone on twitter can freely harass him without consequence.
I don't know what you guys are talking about but I love the chao garden and I finally made my first chaos chao the other day after playing this game for over a decade
Personally speaking, I find the Sonic Adventure games great. I think 1 is better than 2, but 2 is still excellent.

Cartoons take a long time to actually be put on television. I guarantee that when the drawing and voicing portion was done, the classic design was still being used.

I wouldn't say they're hated, honestly. They're just not at the level of extreme popularity that they once were. Even though everyone used to gripe about sonic fans, I found the passion people had for these games long after they came out to be admirable.
The games themselves are pretty good, somewhat dated, even kinda timecapsule-y. It kind of reminds me of Death Note or The Exorcist in that you had to be there, man.
A lot of the sonic adventure 1 issues are fixed by mods
I 100% SA1 last fall and just 100% SA2 a few days ago, playing them both for the first time then.
They're pretty solid games and I enjoyed them a lot coming off of the classic 2D Sonic games. A little janky at times (mostly camera issues getting you killed at times or just being annoying) and with characters that aren't super great to play like Big and the mech stages (to an extent), but still fun overall. The Sonic/Shadow stages were really good in particular.
Think I might prefer 1 over 2, the adventure fields were a nice touch and the spindash and radar nerf in 2 were annoying. It's a close bar though, and I ended spending more time in 2 anyway, though that was cause getting all the A ranks in 2 is a genuine challenge that can be really fucking frustrating. Also, the Steam version of 2 was noticeably more crash-prone compared to 1.

Yeah, they're pretty popular still in the fandom, many still consider either or both to be the best 3D game in the series.
And I definitely agree about the passion bit, Sonic fans have one of the most active fangame scenes for any franchise. Hell, the SRB2 fangame was so damn good it is what actually got me interested in the series proper.
That said, it's still an annoying fanbase in a lot of ways. So many fans still whinge about the "sonic was never good" meme to the point there's a gorillion sonic youtubers praising the worst games as hidden gems and shit. The sheer amount of them creaming their pants of Sonic's characterization in Black Knight is astounding.
>sonic was never good
This is how you justify the years of poor releases I think. Of course 2D sonic was good.

YouTubers are gonna be awful in any fandom. I think the good outweighs the bad with sonic these days, honestly, there are retards but there are much less than there used to be.
The Sonic Colors remake is sad. It's awful and just makes me miss when yearly sonic releases were a thing
