it state that it was a landmark RPG for using predetermined characters and scifi setting but isnt megami tensei features satan coming out of your windows 98 box since july 1987, when phantasy star was december? i dont get it.

The article might specifically mean outside Japan, since MegaTen was never released overseas.

It might also be quibbling that MegaTen had some predetermined characters but not all predetermined characters (though you could further argue that even the demons are predetermined, since you couldn't rename them like FF1 characters. IIRC anyway.)

I agree that claiming Phantasy Star's setting was innovative for being "science fantasy" is just wrong though. It is distinct from MegaTen's in obvious ways but "science fantasy" is not the right term to illustrate the contrast. I'd call it a planetary romance or something.
