How can we make 4-ch attract more than 5 people? (142)

Think of ideas in this topic.

We need something to actually get this place semi-active.

2 Name: Anonymous : 2007-07-11 08:20 ID:zFU7Voz/

give me prizezes for coming here. then i will telling people 'you come to 4-ch! look! lookit these nice prizes it gived to me!' and they will say, 'ooo-00ooh, how great 4-ch is! i am going there to make many postings at once!' and so the poeples will come!

We need some form of advertisement that isn't directly advertising, i.e. making wikis for the site, linking to the site in different places, etc.

Another way is to put it in the signature/info/whatever of any site that you go to. I sometimes click on people who do that for other site, so it may get somebody.

We need to put on something big. Maybe a contest, maybe a niche board (that doesn't cater to 10 people like DQN does), etc.

That won't work unless someone has connections (which they don't).

Media attention is our biggest problem though. We don't have enough people to do anything major, but I'm sure we could think of something. A big thing right now is youtube, we could do something with that.

The problem is not the lack of users, the problem is that the users who do visit rarely post. And then (some) complain about it.

i think this board looks like a japanophile board, which puts off many normal people, especially because it bears a slight resemblance to 4chan. so i propose something like this:
rename

  • anime -> animation
  • manga -> comics

and allow general discussion on western animation and comics as well as anime and manga in those boards. just because this site is inspired by 2ch doesn't mean it has to be heavily biased towards japanese subjects.

36 Name: Anonymous : 2007-08-11 14:55 ID:5OG22POC

Yeah, but then we lose the japanophiles, which are currently most of the boards population.

37 Name: Anonymous : 2007-08-11 16:25 ID:DVZBMXD9

>>36
i think the japanophiles would stay, it's not like discussion of anime and manga would be banned. it just wouldn't be the sole focus of two boards anymore.

38 Name: Anonymous : 2007-08-11 17:23 ID:5OG22POC

Does 2-ch have a seperate section dedicated to foreign comics, or is that stuff worked into the current manga sections?

Seems like 99.99% of either comics or animation would be Japanese, so they probably don't bother.

Might be a valid point, now that I think about it, although maybe it could be "Manga & Comics" and "Animation" as a compromise.

If people see the manga in there, they'll think of anime when they see the "animation" and not be hesitant to post about it, without being turned away from posting about foreign stuff as well.

39 Name: Anonymous : 2007-08-11 17:27 ID:5OG22POC

And then of course there's the question of changing the name...

"Futaba" had a distinct name to distinguish itself from its URL "2chan"

We seem to be adopting 4-ch more often than "Channel4 BBS". Maybe we need a nickname, and a distinctive mascot.

No offense intended to fans, but how many potential Disney lovers and American comics and BD lovers do you think there are who would be attracted to 4-ch as a result?

41 Name: Anonymous : 2007-08-12 05:06 ID:KeSYN81A

Yeah, the only way it would draw more people is if the more neutral name scared fewer people away who might not be into anime/manga/Japanese pop culture. It's questionable whether we'd want to draw such people here though. And I should think they'd be chased off by the very title page anyway.

42 Name: Anonymous : 2007-08-12 05:11 ID:KeSYN81A

I do feel we're getting overshadowed by 4chan. Maybe because of our name.

44 Name: Anonymous : 2007-08-13 13:38 ID:DVZBMXD9

>>41
you're saying you wouldn't want to attract more people who aren't into japanese pop culture? for me the greatest failing of 4-ch is that probably over 50% of its users are somewhat obsessed with it.

45 Name: Anonymous : 2007-08-14 01:53 ID:Heaven

2-ch didn't get big by obsessing over American culture, what self-respecting jap would want to visit such a website?

For 4-ch to get as big as 2-ch, it would have to attract everyday people with a wide variety of interests relative to their home culture (but preferably not of the AOL-type regular). Sacrificing the Nippon-centric focus would be a necessary step towards popularity, but I doubt this is what the owner/operators of 4-ch would wish.

46 Name: Anonymous : 2007-08-14 09:03 ID:Q+te5IZq

51 Name: Anonymous : 2007-08-14 15:23 ID:mZ6zAPMJ

The kind of community I want to see at 4-ch consists of some people that would run away because of either the name (similarity to 4chan) and the neko girl on the front page.

What I really want to see is a 4-ch with a userbase of mostly intelligent, rational and fun people, people that aren't afraid to be a little DQN once in a while but also contribute worthwhile ideas to various discussion topics. Of course, this is a Utopian dream...there's no way 4-ch itself can get away from its name and its anime-fan userbase, and the chances of a new anonymous board without all the anime connotations arising and becoming successful is pitifully low.

52 Name: Anonymous : 2007-08-14 16:41 ID:RwHfA52K

One of the reasons may be that few Japanese people understand English. If we could draw more Japanese, the site could get much bigger.

don't worry you guys, i am basically a newcomer here

now that 4chan is a retarded fail-filled shadow of its former self, smaller communtities like this are becoming much more appealing

places like this with more of a niche appeal arent flooded by 12year old faggots looking for the newest meme and some funny pics, etc, they have completely killed 4chan

here there is a base in reality, many here are actually hikkis and otaku and have problems, making it interesting and always full of content unlike 4chan which has become extceedingly shallow

also, you talk of spinoffs? i wasnt aware of any other, especially more popular, BBSs. Could you give me some links?

I'm new as well, and I came here hoping for the kind of discussion found in 2ch. I wasn't really expecting it though. I make no claim to Japanese superiority, but they seem to handle the internet a lot better than we do. Something about the internet, perhaps. I think our best bet for new, good users is to have every non-hikkimori here tell all their friends about the place.

91 Name: Anonymous : 2007-09-30 07:27 ID:IPKOBnGm

hmmm... as for trying to attract more english speakers to 4-ch (specifically americans and canadians), cultural differences obviously play a large role... i think that americans dont typically like the anonymous aspect as much as many japanese do-- americans are generally more individualistic and less worried about saving-face... so the complete anonymous factor just really doesnt translate well for american audiences.

also, americans obviously like asking questions and looking up answers... otherwise Wikipedia and Yahoo! Answers wouldnt be as popular as they are. so its not as though americans are uninterested in learning new things and exploring topics on the net...

personally, i always have found japanese websites to be wordy and ugly. 2-ch is an ugly site. and 4-ch is too... it reminds me of windows 3.1... outdated and blah. while i realize thats not the point of a forum like this, i think that the way a website looks really affects how popular it will become with americans. i think americans like the flashier websites that additionally have more networking capabilities. in general, perhaps they really like more visual characteristics-- pictures of people, avatars, signatures, videos of funny things, cat macros... whatever! for example, yahoo answers has personalized avatars, screen names, a point system to show off your status... etc. these are all things most americans value in a website.

also the topics here on 4-ch prove that it's really only for people who are interested in japanese culture-- so, being that this site was made by densha otoko fans, it's going to be biased and appeal mostly only to other densha otoko fans. Maybe this isn't even what people want, but in order to get 4-ch to become a commonplace website in American homes, it certainly needs to be ran and moderated by people interested in things that don't include anime, manga, otaku lifestyle, etc. not that these things are bad, they certainly belong here, but it really just doesn't appeal to anybody but a very very very very small proportion of Americans (although it is certainly a growing number).

anyway, i certainly see why this site is not going to catch on here in the states-- after watching densha otoko, i was excited to see if 4-ch was anything like 2-ch. but, while i'm disappointed, it really is to be expected!

basically, i guess for 4-ch to be popular with americans, it really has to be geared towards what americans like. that seems pretty simple huh?

hope my 2 cents helps!

92 Name: Anonymous : 2007-09-30 16:54 ID:apWM+aZ1

> I agree we should give this place some more Americanization, but that should be done with the topics and boards, not by adding avatars and invisionfree crap.

agreed on the second point - if you're going to add avatars and registration and points and shit, what makes this any different the thousands of other forums?

as for "Americanization", well, how about internationalization? Americans aren't the only English speaking people in the world. This place needs to appeal to Americans, British, Australians, all the English-speaking people of the world, wherever they may be. Even Canadians. Having Anime and Manga boards right there at the top of the boardlist makes this look like an otaku forum, and is definitely offputting to people who aren't into that sort of thing (ie interesting people) - this site would probably be better served by merging them both into general animation and comics boards.

95 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-01 16:15 ID:8qegoAkh

I suppose having a name and concept quite similar to 4chan is also offputting to ... well, everyone. But there's not much that can be done about that.

98 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-01 18:56 ID:8qegoAkh

4chan is imitating Futaba Channel (2chan), 4-ch is imitating 2channel (2ch). That they're both anonymous boards based on Japanese sites, both with names containing a 4 where the Japanese version had a 2, and both containing some derivation of the word "channel", is enough to connect them in many people's minds.

I think that a board navigation on the top or bottom of the page would help me get curious about boards I don't visit very often. I never use the navigation frame and I think most people don't either.

Also, it could help to feature good threads on the homepage - kind of like wakachan does with the image of the day for example. Basically something that shows actual activity.
Since there's a splashscreen and only a news post every 3 months, the homepage is kind of a missed opportunity.

There is a navigation frame? And a home page / splash screen?

(I always come here from the Wakachan front page)

As for getting more posters... Get the people who post in imageboards. They already get the whole thing about posting anonymously, or with tripcodes, etc. Recently I've seen quite a bit of overflow from 4chan /b/, for example to iichan /b/. That seems to be the way people find that place. Not through finding it "on their own".

We just have to mention this place occasionally, and that it sucks slightly less. And also, you know, post once in a while. (gasp!)

Kind of what >>79 said I guess.

I think the text board culture is very vital.

We need to preserve the style and structure, giving a different layout system or accounts, avys etc would ruin it all.

To enhance the user base of 4-ch we could inform people about it at events such as anime conventions, video game conventions and telling everybody at your work, college or school.

I would also like the see the smaller image boards such as ko-chan and iichan become more popular.

> I would also like the see the smaller image boards such as ko-chan and iichan become more popular.

This has been reiterated many times, but let me say it again: with popularity comes idiots. Just look at 4chan. The reason ko-chan and iichan are so much better is their lack of popularity.

Is 3-ch.net taken?

Maybe they should change the name. After all, isn't four an unlucky number? Especially as it associates us with the Other One.

Channel 3, everybody, or 3 Channel!

good point, if you want an international super awesome message board it probably isn't great that its name sounds like "death channel" to one sixth of the world's population

> Especially as it associates us with the Other One.

even better point

I don't think people from the PRC are going to be coming to this site.

guys we definitely do NOT want to americanize, mainstream ourselves, etc.

If 4-ch does not keep it's niche, 'densha-otoko' identity as some of you referred, it will just become shallow garbage like 4chan has

the mainstream has no basis, only communities with a niche and basis will survive

look at gurochan
its an extremely tiny community with an extreme niche, and it is one of the best left
wherther or not you are into guro, it cannot be deinied that their boards are home to a great userbase and carry out real discussions that consist of more than DESUSSLDOL NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER!!!!!!!!!!!1 and shit

yeah it looks ugly and bland to americans, but we need to keep roots to japanese net culture, ive personally grown to like this basic look, it feel slike home

bringing in more people defeats the purpose if they kill the site

we only want people who are willing to immerse themselves and learn about our culture; we DEFINITELY DO NOT need or want to bend and change ourelves ot meet THEIR needs and wants

  1. 2 channel has no niche.
  2. This site is an imitation.
  3. This is why there are boards covering topics other than anime/manga.
  4. 4 channel does have a niche, see #2

I don't know what I'm getting at here.

2channel may have no niche as you say, but in imitating it we have gained a niche of obscure japanese internet culture, 'densha otoko', etc

even though we DO technically have all those boards, theres no denying we have a pretty distinct atmosphere

i mena its not a fucking sports forum, just because we have a sports board

Change "general" category to /b/ and you get 5 million more people.

126 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-15 07:32 ID:u1rY9388

It's a text board not an image board. I don't think /b/tards would last five minutes here.

127 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-15 12:08 ID:BV9LPy41

Hello,

I'm new in 4-ch, and I must say that I like very much this BBS.

I find the idea of a completely 100% text only and anonymous forums quite interesting, it resembles much more my ideal of purely abstract mind to mind communication that the internet should be able to provide, instead of becoming more and more a tightly surveilled medium,...

Although I'm not an otaku, I like japanese-related stuff, and I don't mind that japanophilia plays an important role here. And even if 4-ch.net starts as a pastiche of 2ch.net, it does not mean that it can't evolve into something interesting in its own way.

Also, I don't think there is any need to americanize this place (I don't even live in the americas). On the contrary, it would be nice if anyone can come here and participate, with english writing skills as sole requirement.

128 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-15 12:24 ID:BV9LPy41

>> 127 (continued)

Why should 4-ch.net become more popular? To have more reading material? quicker feed-back?

I think that if quality remains an important requirement alongside quantity, then there is only one option: to post interesting stuff, and react to interesting posts. The more interesting text there is, the more people will come and participate, while maintaining the quality level,...

Although I'm new with this, I think 4-ch.net is most useful to exchange and discuss about pretty personal issues and thoughts (aside from ranting). For most other things, other places are probably better suited(meet people, get technical help, education, etc).

So I guess that probably the best way to increase the interest level of 4-ch.net is to create a welcoming atmosphear to people who want to discuss, and contribute with meaningfull contributions to their posts.

129 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-15 12:31 ID:BV9LPy41

>> 127 (continued)

Finally, here are my 2 technical questions about the BBS:

1 - This is a text centered system, so every enhancement to readability would be welcome. I don't know if it's the computer I'm writting on which has a problem, or if it's 4-ch fault's, but it would be more eye pleasing if the text had some CSS formating to render it more readable/elegant. Of course, this CSS formatting could remain optional, so that 2ch.net purists remain satisfied.

2 - I like the anonymity of 4-ch.net, but how can one follow discussions over days and weeks? With time I forget to which threads I have contributed, and it would be interesting to see how people reacted to my posts,... If I wanted to write just for myself, I would simply use my PC, no need for the internet...

130 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-15 12:37 ID:BV9LPy41

Gasp!

Of course, as soon as I post this I discover the board stylesheet menu... Guess I'll go for Mercury ;-)

131 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-15 15:56 ID:u1rY9388

Well it's pretty obvious that one of the attractive features is the ability to be somewhat anonymous. If you were to talk about a personal issue on a regular forum it could quite possibly damage your e-persona.

132 Name: Anonymous : 2007-10-15 16:26 ID:BV9LPy41

>>131

Almost, but not quite,... One can be anonymous in most forums by inventing a nickname. 4-ch.net is not special in that regard.

It's the absence of nicknames which is special in 4-ch, because it prevents the building up of a persona, which could limit your identity on-line in the same way as your identity limits you IRL.

As an added bonus, you don't have to deal with people using different nicknames online in order to behave differently.

Of course, many forums have the "Guest", "Anonymous Coward" option, but this does not work if the majority uses nicknames.
