Where do you meet people on the internet outside of the normal branching mechanisms (friend-to-friend-to-friend)?
This is an anonymous forum, so you cannot privately connect with people.
Other non-anonymous social forums have preexisting tribes which are difficult to access unless you really have something to offer. Anonymity seems to be the only way to combat this.
Other non-anonymous help forums are different than real-life because it is all business and very little need or desire for side-chatter which may sow a relationship.
So where does the internet meet people? Are there any specific places designed exclusively for this scenario?
livejournal? myspace?
I don't know about you, but I only ever use LiveJournal for talking to friends I already know. And MySpace is too chaotic and crappy to actually meet interesting people on.
But I have met over a dozen new people on Facebook. It's suitable for that.
Craiglist is full of horny, single moms.

Facebook is only good for meeting people at your school, and if you don't go to college, you're out of luck.

Here in Germany, many Internet Boards organize Real Life Meetings to play and talk and stuff.
2.I play an mmorpg
Also went to many meetings, often only with people I knew. Also met my Girlfriend there and many friends i visited at home and stuff. my social skills improved really a lot thanks to that :)

I had a friend who was pretty WoW addicted. After a while (A week or so) his girlfriend became pretty pissed at him.
He showed her WoW. Now their both addicts and aometimes sit in the same room at their PC's and play WoW. I don't know if thats a good or a bad thing...

I've gotten to know dozens of people through IRC, some of which I've also met in real life later on. I guess that's part of "other non-anonymous social forums", but I don't think the whole thing about pre-existing tribes usually matters as much as you seem to indicate.

well, you shouldnt be too addicted i think, or at least you should know that there are more important things. Whenever I meet mmorpg people or my gf we for sure dont play games, although i was very addicted too (6-10 hours/day - but stopped mmorpgs for now).
However, the people that really have problems dont even go to meetings. At least some i know. this is more a bad thing than i'd say.

my friend's bf introduced her to WoW after she started getting pissed.
now they sit in different rooms at their computers and play (it's a condo so the den isn't big enough for 2 comps?). apparently some days they don't even talk to each other, despite living together, they just make dinner and carry their bowls to the respective computers and play until they go to bed. they go to work the next day and do it all over again.

I'm starting to believe the people talking about how some computer games are really bad for you, but I guess it's not Counterstrike and Q3A they should be going after. Then again, I played WoW for a while, and then just stopped after I got bored. It's probably like alcohol: Some people can get drunk from time to time and have no problems at all, some drink and drink and just can't stop.
There probably should be a "MMORPG addicts anonymous" or something.
