There's a difference between being a reclusive loner and hikikomori. A recluse can do with or without, but would perfer to be indoors and leave only as needed, but a hikikomori would even start growing his/her own food in hydroponic gardens if it meant avoiding leaving the house.

Why would you want to be a hikikomori / shut-in anyway? It sucks ass. A real shut-in would either want to escape from their mental prison ASAP (despite a complete ineptitude for doing so) or suffer from fear so debilitating that they can't even ponder the possibility of their situation being revocable.
