I've heard a lot of good things about Saikano and I like the artwork.

What exactly is the difference apart from the special features or lack of it, and the number of discs? More importantly, does the bargain edition pixelate when a lot of things is happening, ruining the show's scenery?
That seemed to happen in my 2 disc Lain DVD, bearable but annoying. And that was 13 episodes only.

The one-disc version is a Hong Kong bootleg, and quite possibly has nearly incomprehensible subtitles.

if you see a full, popular series for 10-30 bucks, it is probably bootleg. bootleg quality is a total crapshoot but 90% of the time the subtitles are bad enough to ruin the show. sometimes the video will be shit, so on. i have a bootleg of the mazinger movies, and the video's gorgeous but the subtitles say things like GATE ROBOT IS ABOUT TO FORMING and shit.
I've seen the r2 release 3 disc set. It was amazing.
Since the whole series is compressed into 2 disc in Viz's official box set, is the 4 disc better in terms of quality?

The video and audio quality was amazing, but there were no subtitles...
