Inspired by the "What anime really surprised you and why?" thread, I think it's time we fess up and say that that one series we always insult, belittle, or just ignore is actually the one that touched us deep in our heart.
For me the main one that pops into mind is Gravitation. It and couple episodes of Loveless are the only two shōnen-ai animes I've ever seen, but I ended up really liking this to the point that I even read the manga too. I don't even remember why I started watching it, but the drama and dynamics between Shuichi and Eiri kept me hooked. Of course I'll never admit this and have on more than one occasion made fun of Gravitation with my friends, but somewhere deep in my closest is a box with all 12 manga volumes and the anime boxset lovingly packed away.
Hetalia is the other one that I've recently become pretty obsessed with but hide from others. Enough of my friends have seen the anime that I feel comfortable admitting that I like to watch it, but if anyone asks if I've read the web comic I pretend like I don't even know there is a web comic.
So yeah, please share your secret anime loves or better yet, any stories you may have about being caught or something. It'll be cool to read and who knows, you it may even inspire us to watch something we normally would not.
Kanamemo. Everyone keeps bashing that show so I can't bring myself to openly admit that I like it.
>>2
I thought Kanamemo would be this for me, but after a couple of episodes I simply forgot to keep downloading it.
I have explained in detail to several people why Strawberry Panic sucks, but I secretly love it for most of the same reasons I would use to explain why it's a bad show. In fact the franchise overall is one of my favourite, but there's only one person (people on Anonymous message boards aside) I'll ever admit this to.
In general despite bashing them I tend to like shows which are really melodramatic and over the top, but I would probably admit to most others.
Anything by Key, really. I don't know why but for some reason their stories click with me. I must have watched Air seven times in the last three years, which really is quite sad. I've also read Planetarian and have been patiently waiting for the other VNs to be translated.
And yes, Strawberry Panic was a terrible and ridiculous show but I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Evangelion thanks to the viewers who read too much into a cash cow
ah glad to be an bit of inspiration OP! I'll contribute:
Honey & Clover.
Obviously, this anime/manga is geared toward older teen girls since the plot fully revolves so much around unrequited love. An anime for chicks man. But after the first 10 minutes i was hooked!! the characters are so well developed, and so human that you cant help but feel for them, if not relate to them. they deal with all the stresses that i go through now: worrying bout my career, juggling work, social, love and school life.
damn psp. i hate writing on these things! anyway go check honey & clover. its great, and im ashamed to admit it to my berserk/detroit metal city lovin friends! haha
Woo! Honey and clover is definitely an awesome anime. Man, I didn't think it was all that much of a chick-anime; but it was realistic, and it was good. Although I can't say I digged the main chick's character design, it stopped bothering me after the second episode because the anime and its story was just too good. I liked every single characer; that's a first for me.
By the way, I'm Id:Wa4vb5eG from your previous topic, and the guy from that most sad moment topic; the one where I recommended Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien. I'm surprised to see how alike we are in our taste of anime! I'm gonna set me a name instead of anon, now.
Nanatsuiro drops. It lets you turn off your mind and take a shower of cuteness and moe.
Ouran Highschool Host Club. It's your typical shōjo show. I'd usually not watch something like that. I just stumbeled upon the OP on YouTube and kind of liked it. Then I decided to check out the first episode. The last episode was very beautiful and I almost cried.
Every anime i've ever watched, pretty much. K-On!, Toradora, Rec, Azumanga Daioh, Clannad & Clannad AS, etc etc. I'm really geared towards girly, love-dovey, sappy anime shows, and it's rather embarassing. Hell I've got Air and Honey & Clover on my HDD now, going to dig into those as soon as I'm done with higurashi.
any yuri anime or anything "taboo". All because of the sex I'm born with, liking yuri or watching things of taboo nature [though not condoning it] is something I have to keep on the DL.
Angel Sanctuary will make you happy with all the blasphemy you see
>>10
Ouran was meh for me. It seemed like it couldn't quite decide on whether it wanted to be dramatic or comedic. Every spare moment they threw in of drama I got excited but then there was no followup.
>>12
Aw man, I bet I found another person who loves Koi Kaze. KK is awesome, but not because it's incest or anything. It's because the relationship builds so slowly and solidly and believably despite their best efforts. Since it's about a brother and sister diddling, though, I have to keep quiet about it.
And I guess you would prefer angsty yuri? Or do you like yuri in general? Because Aoi Hana is pretty damn good but the lesbianism is not portrayed as a big tragic deal.
Boku no Pico
There's a lot! Is it wrong for a guy to enjoy romance-comedy anime more than other genres of anime?
It is only wrong if you let yourself think you are not supposed to
Clannad [seconded]
none,if you are ashamed you don't love it.
Kara no Kyoukai
Code Geass
>>20
Don't be ashamed at all.
Personally: Kashimashi or Ouran High School Host Club... =/
>>16
No it is not wrong! I have a friend who openly says he watches those genres with pride. (he only watches that genre)
Aria the Animation
I will watch just about any genre of anime. If you are watching it for the story, you will find yourself often enjoying it more than if you just look for combat/cuteness/etc/
Monster
>>27
WHAT
Natsume Yuujinchou
Jewel Pet, it's basically a show to sell crap to little girls, but it's funny and has Kamai Eri and Hirano Aya.
Tsubasa Chronicle
Yu-Gi-Oh. It's self-explanatory.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Strike Witches - Fanservice, no pants, etc. Great combat scenes and comedy though.
Kanamemo, Hidamari Sketch, Strawberry Marshmallow, Bottle Fairy, and other moe-nothing-happens shows. I can't resist the adorable characters
Ouran Host Club - girly shoujo anime but I was addicted throughout its run
Mononoke
I'm totally ashamed that every once in a while i try to catch up on naruto. I really hate the main characters (cough*naruto, sakura, sasuke, kakashi*cough) but i want to know what happens to Rock Lee, Hinata, Shino and Chouji.
Honey and Clover [Fourthed]
>>35
Must agree with Ouran Host Club, it was very addicting.
This new season has given me too much anime to be ashamed about: Kampfer, Kobato, and Nyan Koi being the 3 worst that I will watch to the end... maybe.
Fullmetal Alchemist
Clannad.....err Kanon...Key stuff...Heck I even liked Tomoyo and Kyou chapters...xD
Kara no Kyoukai [seconded]
Hahaha, well I see a lot of the replies here are to do with minor ecchi/romance animes which are pretty normal.
I don't know maybe Kodomo no Jikan some extremely loli-fueled anime. Then again. Lolicons are quite common. :P
Nodame Cantabile
Kiss x Sis
Summer Wars
Kimi ni Todoke
Kannagi
all of them ;_;
Toradora! [seconded]
I don't understand.
Summer Wars, Kimi ni Todoke, Kannagi and Toradora were all great animes. Why would they be something to be ashamed about?
>>52 i'd have to agree with this comment... i mean i loved the story of summer wars. The romance in kimi ni todoke was cute and good.
anyways i liked watching shugo chara. Interesting show, but got repetitive near ep 80 (thats like what ep 30 second season?)... i guess i couldnt say that im ashamed of it... cause i still like watching whatever interests me :D
Eden of the East
Ouran High School Host Club for sure....
Also Special A, its so similar to OHSHC yet still amazing
and...
I, My, Me Strawberry Egg
I found it last year and have watched it through 3 times since....
its hilarious, the cheap gags make me laugh everytime and the story is weird enough
Princess Nine
>.> kodomo no jikan
gonna have to be Kimi ni Todoke, kaicho no maid sama (think i got that title right) and half a billion other shoujo anime that i watch.
apprently i can watch mouse, hellsing, naruto, etc and not care to be called a pervert, a sadist, or a weebo, but im deathly afraid of people finding out that i like shoujo anime.
maybe a male thing. dunno
Japanese Annime girl movie.
http://anicha.animax.co.jp/blog/anicha_00004/
I My Me Strawberry Eggs! I recommended it to a friend and she thought I wanted to crossdress -_-
Lamune because its such a sucker punch at the end, I cried :(
Tenjho Tenge... who needs plot?
>>57
one-upping you....
Moetan.
Boku no Pico
strike witches
no one must know my secret
Madoka Magic- Watches /that/ episode Nevermind. 0_0
Hmm... Steel Angel Kurumi, K-On!, and...
Teh Touhou Animu.
Naruto
Even though I'm not a rabid Narutard I still worry about people stereotyping me. Pretty much all the merch and fan-made stuff I've bought centers around Orochimaru and the Sound Village.
Well i'm ashamed to admit that I watched galaxy angel... all (i think) three seasons... what a waste of time. i kept hoping that all my effort would come to fruition and there would be a wonderful meaningful ending... alas i was sorely disappointed.
Girls bravo, green green, air, alien 9 just to name a few that i'm not proud of having enjoyed. Also i sometimes try to catch up on bleach.. i used to really enjoy it, but the stereotyping has really made it hard to enjoy recently.
Dance with the vampire bund
I really don't like the vampire and wolf theme, but after reading a couple of pages then I realize it's not that bad at all.
Mahou Shoujo series, even the ones with a seinen demographic. Well, and the yuri obsessed fanbase
Rotte no Omocha! / Lotte's Toy!
all the shonen-ai i watch... -___- loveless, gravitation, sih, jr, etc
it's not exactly that i'm ashamed of it. it's more that my friends will laugh at me -__-
i feel that i can get away with loveless though. since it has an interesting plot. i mentioned it to one of my friends after she told me she was watching angel sanctuary, so i was like if she watched that, loveless should be fine. XD we then talked about how we hide our computers so our family won't see what we are watching. lol
yeah. my friends wouldn't really judge me. they'd tease me to no end though. :)
but my classmates are another story. oh, god if they found out....
my dad saw me watching loveless. he was like: O.O weirdo...
my sis: you have problems. the anime you watch....
my mom would literally ban anime if she saw it. she freaked out when i showed he ao no exorcist. she's like: that show with all those devils
Ichigo Mashimaro.
Fuck I have no idea what I was thinking at the time.
denpa onna
I watched Strike Witches to see why it was so infamous on adtrw but I actually liked it because of Sanya and Eila.
Axis Powers Hetalia
and also Mermaid Melody
kuroshitsuji (black butler)
persona 4 TV animation
axis powers hetalia
boku no piko
>>78
Doesn't ADTRW (and SA in general) hate any show that features anyone under the age of 18 as its protagonists?
>>71 Lotte's toy
>>73 rou kyu bu
Why? They feature lolicon tendancies. They have cute story though, that makes me wanna squeee.
Vandred (Both seasons)
Why? I saw it when I was a kid, and my mom said that it's too sexy for me. But, I like it's story, the mecha battles, the drama, the epicness.
>>35 Strike Witches
Why? Like s/he said, great combat scenes and comedy. Just the pant-less premise kinda makes it hard when peoples around.
Those and a whole lot more I guess.
Lucky Star.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, but only that half-joking regret that you have for watching any anime that isn't an action-packed crapshoot as a male. Once my maturity escapes the level of an 8th-grade basketball player on that matter, though, consider this point empty.
Arcade Gamer Fubuki, it's about a girl who has special panties that make her better at video games.
I also like the Pokemon anime until Best Wishes and the Yu-Gi-Oh anime until Zexal.
Sorry for necroing, but this thread is interesting.
All of them when offline.
None of them when online and chatting with strangers.
>>87
Why are you afraid to admit you like anime in public?
>>88
Have you seen the people admitting to liking anime in public outside of Japan?
I'm afraid to do anything in public to be honest. I'm gaining nothing and risking a lot, so to hell with it. Friends? What's that?
>>90
That's my line of reasoning. People decide within the first 10 seconds of meeting whether they like you or not. Might as well admit that you like anime
Meeting new people. Ever. How does this even happen to you?
>>92
I don't meet a lot of new people anymore because of the stupid meme flu, but before that, my college had an anime club. It kind of sucked because everyone was always talking over the anime, but it was a way to meet new people
>>93
What type of anime do people watch at anime clubs? I always assumed it would just be battle shonen.
I wouldn't say ashamed because I have chad thundercock self-assurance and I don't feel bad for my taste, but man oh man I fucking loved Mysterious Girlfriend X. It was honestly really charming and cute as fuck. Though, yeah, the ending was a letdown.
READ THE MANGA YOU FAGS.
>implying I can read
Mysterious Girlfriend X was interesting. It had really really detailed art at first, but got to really really good eroticism closer to the end instead.

Watched this thanks to this poster.
Really great watch, I am glad to have found good anime.
For me, it would be Kanon(2006), which I have watched once a year for the past 16 years. Also Koi Kaze, which I mentioned to a classmate in high school, she looked at me with utter disgust for the rest of the year.
I'm not ashamed of any anime, but I'm smart enough to avoid mentioning some to most people. It's hard to say you watched a very sexual mahou shoujo. People might react hostile...
>>100
I've also seen Kanon many times, but not as much as you. Seen the 2002 version and the 2006 version several times each.
