Hello there /music/

Since we don't have a thread to discuss Jazz music. I decided to create one.

As the name implies, this thread is for Jazz music discussions! You may talk about artists/bands, songs/albums, styles/sub-genres, etc.

Most jazz, I get the impression it's more fun for the players than the listeners. I like Sun Ra though, his music and his approach to life.

If you listen to more jazz, you will find it fun.

>>4 I've listened to a fair bit over the years, but nothing really grabs me. I appreciate the musicianship, but that's not what I listen to music for. Hmmm, I like chaotic free jazz, and I like jazz flavours infused in other genres, but I can't think of a straight "jazz album" I love. Can you recommend me some high-energy, maybe psychedelic, fun jazz, with really audacious - cheeky even - compositional tricks? Nothing which is focussed on "creating a mood" or "painting a picture" or anything too wanky (I mean the wrong kind of wanky)

Hey. Let me know what do you think of these:
Komeda Quintet — Astigmatic
Pat Martino — Exit
Pat Martino — Nightwings
Randy Weston — Tanjah
Tõnu Naissoo Trio — Tõnu Naissoo Trio
Yosuke Yamashita Trio — Sunayama

>>6 Hi! I'm about to listen to Pat Martino's "Nightwings", and noticed that sorted by album it follows Cardiacs' "Nighttracks - The Janice Long Sessions", which is a very tough act to follow and also a good idea of the BLOODY CHEEK that musically thrills me!

>>6 Hey, I listened to the albums you recommended. They were okay, there was nothing I disliked, but it wasn't all quite the thrill ride I was after. Tanjah was sorta fun but felt a bit backgroundy. I liked "Vaïke Monica" on Tõnu Naissoo Trio. Sunayama
was pretty good, as was Exit - "Three Base Hit" was a fun jaunt, Blue Bossa was pretty sweet too. I liked Astigmatic, it felt like the saxophonist is taking the piss in a good way. The one I enjoyed most was Pat Martino — Nightwings. I have to tell you though, I started with TNT on and listened diligently, stroking my chin and going "ah yes that was a neat little thing they did there, hmmm yes good" and thought about it for a while after it finished... but the next thing I happened to listen to was this song for the first time: https://vimeo.com/225904972 I found more pure glee in the cheeky musicality in those two hundred seconds than any jazz I've listened to.

Maybe I need to see more jazz groups live?

In a recent episode of the Simpsons, Lisa's wearing earphones and Bart asks "Hey what kind of jazz are you listening to, stupid or boring?" I thought it was funny - what other types are there?
