China is already taking bold steps toward an alt-fuel future. In late 2003, Beijing mandated some of the world's toughest fuel-efficiency standards. China is even now one of the largest markets for alternative fuel vehicles, with 200,000 in service. In preparation for the 2008 Olympics, Beijing officials plan to convert their entire bus fleet of nearly 120,000 vehicles to run on compressed natural gas (CNG).

Good thing they're also working on ways to efficiently process hydrogen, then - one of the larger problems out there. As of now, hydrogen fuel would not have the desired effect of enormously alleviating pollution, because the required energy for processing would still come from (coal or oil fueled) caloric power plants.
However, French, German, Greek, Danish and Chinese joint expert groups are, under the project name hydrosol, working on solar ovens (is that how you say fours solaires in english?) to provide a possible solution that doesn't self-destruct within seconds (np @ temperatures that vaporize iron) while generating enough energy. Too many people in the West forget that China is still a communist oligarchy. There's no dictatorship per se, because the people who run the show are a select group with a figurehead. But they're just as likely to do cruel, merciless things to their people and neighbors as any other oligarchy, and the citizens have no recourse but to suffer. I think the oligarchy is figuring out that crapping in its own backyard is not only bad for the environment, it's bad for morale, and that's why they're taking steps to clean up. But I think that they're not really serious about it, they just want to project a happy image to the non-Communist world so they will be respected.
