Fans of RPGs (109)

05/01/09(Sun)17:09 ID:Heaven [Del]

To all fans of RPGs, Japanese or English, I suggest
we get together here on this thread and talk about them.
I'll be pleased if you introduce interesting and exciting
RPGs available for free.

I think it must be incredibly worth while
for Japanese people to play English RPGs
in that they can learn the language
through intersiting scenarios. So I ask
English-speaking people to bring your favorites up.
In return, Japanese people tell you about
interesting freeware RPGs(though in Japanese, I think).
(There're many of the cool PRGs in Japan, too.)

Let's talk about RPGs and have fun!

05/01/09(Sun)19:53 ID:SsayWR+z [Del]

Because English-speaking people are money grubbing bastards, there are not many "interesting and exciting RPGs available for free." (_ _)

Maybe ToME. http://www.t-o-m-e.net/

It's >>21 from the last thread.

Concerning The Way, that version at gamingw must have been old. At the developer's site (http://www.crestfallen.us) it is said that "you don't need to have RPG Maker installed to play it". So I think you can get the newer version which doesn't require RPG Maker there.

But nevertheless I'd recommend you to get the english Maker's graphics pack (RTP) too, since many games require it to be installed.
And here are some actual games links (extracted from our 'rm2kdarkness' cool games thread).

Thank you!
Tales of Middle Earth, it sounds intriguing,
for I saw lord of the ring on TV!
(the trilogy is famous in Japan as well.)
I think I'll try the game later on.

>>3
How can I thank you?
"Thank you" couldn't cover my appreciation.
I'm enjoying "The Way" now thanks to you!

Incidentally, it's sad to find out that RPG Maker isn't
distributed now. I read that when I googled RPG Maker.

And now it's my turn.
Let me introduce seraphic blue, which runs on RPG
http://www2.odn.ne.jp/~caq12510/SeraphicBlue.htm
The story line is criss-crossing but highly refined,
so this RPG has been popular since its release.
Usually, it takes players 50-55 hours to get through the story.
(In the game the creator uses a bit difficult Japanese idioms
and kanji on purpuse, though...)

05/01/10(Mon)19:01 ID:MK6929eb [Del]

There are also a few classic RPGs that have been released as freeware by the companies. Try Betrayal at Krondor http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=116

05/01/13(Thu)00:12 ID:Heaven [Del]

There are many different types of RPGs...if you like the Diablo style hack and slash, you could even try the "roguelikes" - ASCII text based RPGs. I believe there are a number of Japanese translations and resources, too.

http://games.roguelife.org/ (Japanese)

http://www.phial.com/angband/ - Angband (English)
http://www.thangorodrim.net/ - Angband + variants (English)
http://www.zangband.org/ - ZAngband (Popular Angband variant - English)
http://www.nethack.org/ - Nethack (English)

And here's a free web-based game that I think could be called an RPG. I'm not sure, though. (w

It has a lot of English language / Internet based humor, though, that may be difficult to be understand.

05/01/13(Thu)01:51 ID:Heaven [Del]

I've tried Final Fantasy Time And Again.
That brings back memories.

Final Fantasy 4 was one of my favorites
maybe more than 10 years ago.
Both the beaufitul graphics (which really was epoch-making
, then.) and
the facinating story got me excited.

Time And Again seems like a new Final Fantasy 4!
I like it very much.

By the way, I can't download the enhanced version.
Why's that? And one more question, what difference is there
between the normal version and the enhanced one?

Any explanation will be appreciated.

05/01/13(Thu)07:35 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>7

The enhanced version includes mp3s and videos. I don't know why the link isn't working, I think it worked before...

And by the way, Seraphic Blue also is very good. I especially like its authentic jRPG feel and overall (cut)scene "style", so to say - very thought-out in conception.

05/01/13(Thu)11:18 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>8
Thanks a lot.
I wanted to see the videos, but I have to give up..

Anyway, a next jRPG is coming right up.
http://www12.wind.ne.jp/Fool/GM/top.htm

"Garandil Mars" is technically based on RPG
But its charachters are completely original.
So even if you are used to graphics of
RPGツクール or RPG Makers, you can enjoy those of
Garandil Mars as well as the story of it.
One thing I must tell you, however, is that this RPG is
made of 2 parts. It may be sad that the latter part of it
hasn't been comleted yet. So you need to wait for it
to come up. (I'm waiting myself-maybe at least
another year will be needed for the creators to make it)

05/01/16(Sun)15:40 ID:VzN98kiB [Del]

As you see, I've been playing Final Fantasy Time And Again.
And sometimes I couldn't understand at all
what the characters said.(it may not be so much problem if I
don't care about it because I somehow get the story going.)

But I wanted to know what Lucien (one of the protagonists
in the game) meant.
Would you teach me what "I hope my wet, runny eggs show up soon"
was? I know all of the words on the sentence,
but couldn't guess what he was getting at..

05/01/16(Sun)17:40 ID:ZTiuVDto [Del]

>>10 I haven't played the game yet, but if I understand the phrase, he's being sarcastic. What was the area or setting during that dialogue?

Sling!myL1/SLing 05/01/16(Sun)18:39 ID:79vFhfMd [Del]

Runny eggs are half-cooked eggs, still wet.
Usually people don't like runny eggs, so maybe it means the cook is very bad.
And as >>11 said, it's probably sarcastic.

05/01/17(Mon)09:53 ID:Heaven [Del]

>>11-12
Thank you for your reply.
I'd written down only what Lucien said, and
the area or setting during that dialogue escaped me.
I'm afraid I can't remember how the dialogue went.

I somehow understood it was his sarcasm, but I'm not
sure I made sense of him..

So please put me right if what I'm thinking is wrong.
Lucien thought someone(maybe Golzeb, his rival)
would offer his wet, runny eggs,
meaning what he didn't want to happen would take place
sooner or later. He smelled the danger itself.

Anyway, I was finished with this RPG yesterday.
It was fun and I was much satisfied
except that it's only a demo.
So the whole contents of it would be released in the future, I
think. I look forward to it.

We're all fans of RPGs from birth!!
A Japanese company which created the world-famous FF series,
I mean, Square, is not only a big shot, but also a
motivater: lots of amature programmers started distributing
their own RPGs after they enjoyed its games at the age of
the Internet.
Why don't you enjoy the creative amatures' work?

05/02/17(Thu)06:50 ID:Heaven [Del]

Let me introduce 時の故郷(Toki no furusato), or my old town of
time.
This is not an RPG.It's an adventure game of romance.
The story of the game is translated into English by an
English-teaching school in Japan (both Japanese and English
are used in the game). And it's available for nothing.
The animated characters of the game're waiting for you.
So I'm sure you, English-speaking people, can also enjoy the
story even if you don't know the Japanese language at all.
(Downloading skills're needed, though)

Hi there, Azrael and Sephiroth X, makers of FF: Time and Again here. We came across this board on a search engine and hoped to clear things up. First, we are so excited that we have fans outside the USA, it means a lot to us.
As for the phrasing Lucien used, Kain had made a comment to him that offended Lucien. Kain had a hangover from the night before, and was nauseous. Lucien's comment about wet, runny eggs was said to make Kain think of it and throw up. That's why Kain runs over and hunches over the pot.
For all our fans, thank you so much for playing our game. The newest demo is out with big upgrades. Please enjoy it, and our website at http://ff.kgne.net

It was nice to know you stumbled on this board.
And thank you for shedding light on my question.
I'm very clear about what Lucien meant.

I was looking forward to the demo coming, and so
I just downloaded to start it from the point
where I saved in the previous demo.:)
The high end version is superb. I love it!

To tell the truth, however, I've been stuck in the Eblana castle, going nowhere...
Do you have any hint on this? (Sorry to bother you.
I'll try to search the castle once more, anyway)

Azrael 05/02/25(Fri)12:59 ID:Heaven [Del]

Eblana castle is very much a puzzle. Where are you stuck at?

SephirothX 05/02/25(Fri)13:18 ID:Heaven [Del]

The most common place for anyone to get stuck is finding the secret passages. Best hint: read all the books in the library.

I didn't know Phae-Rel was named after you!
Besides, I got moved almost to tears when I read you,
because I've always wanted to understand what the characters
said though my English is limited (so I sometimes look up in
the dictionary difficult English words for me).
Anyway, I'll do what I can do to understand them: guessing,
googling and what not.
But if I can't, where am I supposed to post a question on the
board? On the general disccusion thread?

I'll go back to the game from now on. Thanks again.

But yes if you guys have any questions at all please post in the general forum or Final Fantasy Time and Again forum, or here and we will make sure to help you out.

I was wondering if I could introduce FFTAA to 2ch, the biggest
message system in Japan.

But let me introduce some articles which read about the BBS.
Here is the links to them.
http://www.syberpunk.com/cgi-bin/index.pl?page=2ch

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2ch

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/getarticle.pl5?nc20030213mr.htm

And in the English board of 2ch, there're some Japanese
people who want to enjoy English RPGs.
As a matter of fact, some of them talked about online FF.
This is the link(all coversations in Japanese, though).
http://academy3.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/english/1105127677/l50

So please tell me whether or not it is okay for me
to go ahead and ask them to participate here.
(I wouldn't care if you say "No" after reading about 2ch,
because the board is not always peaceful...)

Azrael 2005-02-28 12:42 ID:Heaven

Sure. I would greatly appreciate that. :) We'd love to get out there so more people can play the game and give their opinions, good or bad there is always room for improvment. Thanks again :)

37 名前: bink 2005-02-28 14:02 ID:Heaven

Greetings!

It is true there are not many good, free English RPG's. However during the mid-90's (when the SNES / SFC had its "golden age") American RPG's were mostly on the PC. They were quite different from jRPG's. They built the foundation for the "American RPG" which is popular to this day. Very often people in America decide to prefer "American" or "Japanese" RPG's -- I myself am a fan of both -- however I have been disappointed with most recent RPG's on both shores. In any case, most of these RPG's are available for download from English Abandonware sites, and you might try them. However the graphics are old and combat is very simple, so it may not be enjoyable today. Get some graph paper, as you will need it.

http://xtcabandonware.com

Just click the "RPG" link at the top and there are 70 or so games. I am unsure about the quality of all of them, but any game made by "SSI" is a part of the "Gold Box Series" which is what I am talking about. Many games by "Interplay" are also good.

One final note, most modern PC's will run these programs far too fast to ever hope to know what is going on. So you will need a free utility called MoSlo:

http://www.hpaa.com/moslo/basic.asp

The easiest way to run the program would be to do a Start | Run command (unsure how to say in Japanese) and type in "c:\moslo\moslo.com /5 c:\windows\command". (The yen symbols are supposed to be backslashes). This will open a command prompt where your CPU is reduced to 5% of its normal speed. If you find that to be too slow or fast, you can change the number after the / to whatever % you want. After the command prompt opens, change directories to wherever you have unzipped the game, and type the command to execute it.

Enjoy, and if you have any questions, I will check this board.

The majority of abandonware games are for DOS, and native windows games tend not to have as many timing issues.

With the PSP, it'll be easier to play both Japanese and English games. I'd like to practice Japanese with RPGs, but I don't have enough money to buy a PSP. Maybe someday.

In the meantime, I also recommend playing old games in emulation. Even though the graphics seem simple, the story is often entertaining. (Although I still can't finish Bahamut Lagoon...)

(Note: In English, when you say RPG, if the person you are talking to is a geek, they may think you mean a pencil-and-paper or tabletop RPG, like D&D. Actually, that's usually what I mean when I say RPG in normal conversation...)

The Enhanced version has a movie intro, (shows a brief sneak preview as well of the 3d model of Azrael I am working on for the Fmv's) The enhanced version is also narrated throughout the game. It also uses mp3 soundtrack as well as other extras. The low end version has none of these things, because we tried to keep it small for people who dont have fast internet service. If you have any other questions feel free to directly email us at timeandagain_@hotmail.com or visit our site at ff.kgne.net we have a growing Message board, with the people who played the characters, Azrael, Phae-rel and Lucian. So feel free to stop by and say hello. :)

Also a new demo will be out soon, will bring you to the end of the moon, but the game will not end there. It will only be 10 hours in and the Full completed game will be 40 hours. The game is divided into episodes and the end of the moon is only the end of Episode 1, so the game will continue and you will get to see what happenes to all of the characters in cluding, Azrael, Lucian, Phae-Rel, Kain, Cecil, Rydia, Edge, everybody :)

2005-07-15 01:22 ID:Heaven

Anybody here read Mahou Sensei Negima! It is so funny. I am very upset to never see an English version of the game!
Why is it that Japan gets all the awesome games and we Americans don't, I'm gonna blame George Bush, because he is against everyone but himself!

59 名前: mugenzero!7UYlRk0P5A 2005-08-01 05:41 ID:Yh+rQ23z

Eh...There are some good American RPGs (Fable), except I don't play them. The ones I play are usually Japanese. However, the majority of the games I play are MMORPGs. ALthough usually lacking in storyline, interaction with other live players are interesting. I wanted to play FFXI, but I don't have a credit card =(
Right now I'm waiting for a MMORPG that combines the gameplay of World of Warcraft and graphics of FFXI. Prays

Right now I am playing Vagrant Story for PS.
It's a very fun game made by the same group who made Final Fantasy Tactics. It's an odd style of RPG, and the ability to build your own weapons and armor is strange, but fun. The battles allow you to chain your attacks together with timed button presses, letting you chain no attacks or hundreds of them.

I can't wait to finally beat it.

Play 100-World Story for the Famicom. You'll never regret it - as long as you don't look at the screen or pick up a controller.

Take an RPG, a board game, and random incomprehensible plots, and there you go.

Dragon Quest must be quite a popular RPG in Japan!
I was speaking with a JP person on BarGIKO and he asked me my interests. They usually consist of MMORPG but he seemed confused. He was a fan of martial arts, so he wasn't too enlightened to the term MMORPG, but asked me if I liked
I played one many years ago, but I guess one was released recently, as he asked, (Of course I had beat the game I played many years ago)
He ended up leaving when I confessed that I was an english speaking person: I guess he wanted faster-paced, more interesting conversation ;P Who doesn't?
In any case, I figured I'd contribute this (maybe) interesting story to the RPG thread. Maybe I'll look into ドラクエ once again!

It is classics of the Otaku education.

Were Fallout 1 and 2 ever localized into Japanese?

I played the first DQ as a kid. Rented it from Blockbuster. But it wasn't otaku. I was six at the time and couldn't name any country outside the US.

DQ7 is pretty good though. I think I'll probably try 8.

The game played DQ5 as a child is unforgettable.
A hero becomes a slave and also does marriage.
Above all, the picture also became beautiful by having become a SFC. Moreover, DQ5's music is also most pleasing.
I want a childhood friend like Bianca whose I am also.

I don't think DQ5 was ever released in the USA.

What do you think of Suikoden? I liked III. IV was a lot worse, but still pretty good.

There is a memory which did suikoden 2. The musical impression remains.
basically,I like RPG's music and the sound team of KONAMI has a high level.
.
like the music of FF,too.

Speaking of KONAMI, it counts on Silent Hill of a horror game.
A sequel will come out still more.

I don't really like horror in general.

I like platformers and RPGs. Jak and Daxter is pretty good, and so is Rachet and Clank. I don't have the nintendo gamecube, but I might get one just to play the new Zelda game.

What's a platformer? (unfamiliar term here in Japan)

It's a game like Super Mario Brothers. The character jumps from place to place. I think it got its name because the landscape in the game has a lot of platforms in it.

What do you call those kinds of games?

2005-09-21 19:06 ID:Heaven

>>78
In Germany, we used to call these "Jump 'n' Runs"

2005-09-23 07:10 ID:Heaven

In Japan they're called "action games".
Games like Zeldas and Diablos are called action RPGs (ARPGs).

In America, Action games are the kind with a lot of fighting and action in them, but that your character doesn't get stronger as you progress.

I tried to get access to your forum, but I'm sorry I couldn't. So if you don't care, let me ask you something. I flew to the moon, went into a cave where the three of them were supposed to be tested or something, proceeded down to B3, and located a save point. But when I went to the save point, I couldn't move at all. Is it a bug? Do you think I need to start over and skip the save point to go on with the event?

I've been enjoying FFTAA very much, though I feel it is tough to go through battles with monsters. If Phae-Rel could chant a magic which recovers HP, not only for herself but also for Azrael and Lucien, it would be more comfortable to play it. I'm worried about MPs and stocks of potions all the time (I can run out of both of them easily, because of opponents damaging Azrael and Lucien and Phae-Rel hugely.

The other side of FF4, this is very interesting but tough at the same time..

Azrael 2006-01-12 19:48 ID:Heaven

The site should be up and running fine now : ff.zefie.com

As far as the testing, you said you went to the save point and you can't move at all? If you can do me a favor, send your save file to timeandagain_@hotmail.com so Sephiroth X can see if its a switch issue or something else is causing that.

The monsters are actually being balanced. We have had this problem for the past few demos, after having so many hours of playibility the monsters and characters need to be tweaked in order to make sure they are balanced. The next demo will have balanced monsters, characters, skills and weapons.

I'm sorry I was dumb enough to delete the file... I should have known you wanted it. If I remember correctly, though, it went like this. I tried to walk on the narrow path before I was asked from somewhere if I was ready, and I thought I wasn't, answered no, and was taken back to B2, then started the way back to B3 again before I noticed there was a save point, and it happened.

Anyway, I cleared the Bahamut event (I didn't use the save point this time), and finally beat Zeromus. It was great fun.
I can't wait for the episode 2. Still, I know I missed a few treasure boxes in the final castle, so I'll seach it again.

Is anyone interested in translation Seraphic Blue? I've heard its a masterpiece, but I don't understand japanese... maybe I'll have to learn it :>

Seraphic blue ? What's that?
Is it a kind of novel or something ?

i played that game Seraphic Blue myself.
thats my personal favorite ever.
though it is free game, i found it much better than consumer games.
its a RPG style game, and some similarities in system to Final Fantasy 7 can be found.
battle dificulity is relatively high, and if players dont think about tactics, they can be killed just by random enemies.
average play time goes over 50 hours.
well, the story line and whole theme are really dark and profound (that was the best part for me), so it definately chooses players.
however the quality is extremely high.

im the one whos waiting for someone translating it so that i can share with my friends.
the language style used is really uniqueness of the auther (Tempura),
and to keep that quality in translation must be a hard job.
learning japanese for that game would be even harder (lots of japanese people dont know how to read kanjis used in the script)

→http://op022943-0.viv777.jp/

Hi, it's 1 here.
Seraphic blue is the most interesting RPG I've ever played.
As I said almost 2 years ago(see >>4), its story line is really awsome, though, as 103 pointed out, it's sort of dark.
(His(103) review is really to the point.)

>>103
Translating his work means a copyright infringement
without his permission... Of course, personally, it's good if many people abroad also enjoy it, though.
Anyway, some of the kanjis Tempura uses is really difficult because they're rarely used in this day and age, yes, so I guess young people like elementary students or jr high would have a hard time with them.
