I haven't honestly kept a diary since I was 10. Doing that for Japanese seems like a good idea though. As far as English goes, try something new every day, find a fluent speaker in both English and Japanese who can point out your errors so you can continuously improve. Other than that, go for it!
It's a good idea, but you have to check it for errors and be quick to correct them or you may start some bad habits that can be hard to be rid of.
