Blue lanterns in Japanese folklore (7)

Hi, I have a question to ask any Japanese residents or anyone with enough knowledge on the subject. What is the meaning behind the blue lanterns you see on either side of passageways and doorways in games like Fatal Frame or Resident Evil 4?

I'm curious.

Blue lanterns are a warning that gaijin should keep out.

Just a gaijin here, but they may refer obliquely to hitodama. Look it up...

That's just it, I haven't found anything about the lanterns themselves, only the hitodama.

If the lanterns are related to hitodama, it is probably nothing more than than a mood-setting thing: "By walking down this passageway you are descending into the realm of the dead - so beware!"

Never played the games though, couldn't say for sure. Also lol gaijin.

maybe it's something like torches in dungeon of Western sword-and-magic fantasy.
