I think asia in general is getting much stronger because of an emphasis on education and research into technology. America is falling back because it isn't as invested in that kind of thing.
What I expect is that China and possibly Korea are going to surpass the US eventually. The thing is, this isn't just Japan. Japan is part of the same trend, but I think it's a bit more general. Asia is rising, Japan is just noticed because of the Otaku.
