I lie often. I do it in order to gauge the intelligence of the audience, or sometimes the character of specific individuals. By creating a well understood chunk of misinformation, such that its flaws and knowledge depth or scope are well known by me, reactions from other individuals concerning it give me a good indication of their perception. For example, presenting a flawed algebraic equation might separate children from teenagers, but presenting a flawed topological construction will separate mathematicians from non-mathematicians. Following a thread usually produces a nice logical rhythm, that one can deliberately disrupt in order to analyze the methods employed to remediate the discourse.
