All I want to know is, has it worked? Has it improved the lives of the patient and her family? If so, awesome. It must have been a very difficult decision, and even if the whole thing creeps me out, I think it's their decision to make, and live with. Indeed, insofar as it reduces the burden and expense of care, it's good for the rest of society, either as taxpayers or as insurance customers.
Indeed, apart from the "ick" factor, I don't really see the down side.
