Complaining about not having any friends right before leaving for college?

What's the problem here? Obviously it's a problem since if you don't have any friends now you'll probably have trouble making them in college, but that isn't always the case, and you should be encountering a fresh batch of people who are of superior quality anyway. You can't miss the friends you don't have.
If you can treat college in a similar way one treats preschool or kindergarten, it should be easy to make friends, right? At least that's what I always thought. In preschool, you could just sit down next to a kid and play legos with them and they'd be your friend before you know it. It's not quite that simple now, there are more steps involved, but the basic principal is the same, so one should approach the process with the same spirit.
