I'm surprised there isn't already a topic like this, but maybe there was and it was archived, or it was oddly named and I just couldn't find it.
This topic is mainly aimed at the new crowds. I'm sure most of the oldbies (like me) would say because of iichan/wakachan and world2ch.
"Middle wavers" will say because of Densha Otoko.
We seem to have very few members, yet very many members, depending on the topic and board you look at. It's sorta like we have a lot of people who only post a few times and stop, or who confine themselves to specific boards.
Anyway, I don't think this site is promoted much anywhere (due to the nature of us 4-chers), so how did you come about it?

I was reading Densha Otoko, but I was visiting 4chan before, then I tried searching something bigger on Overchan and found Wakachan.
Now I'm mostly active on 4-ch.
I wish 4-ch would grow... :(
I saw someone make a post about it on the wakaba imageboard boards, then a little bit later it was added to the wakachan sidebar.
I came from the AA Saloon @ 2ch. Some guys linked to World4ch then I found my way here.
