Why should you know it's purpose? Because knowing the purpose can help you in the long run.
Think for a minute. 1 purpose says that it's to get to know more about your date. Have any questions in your mind? Ask her/him. That way, you'll know more about her. It can be something trivial or something important. Try to steer clear of politics, since thats a really messy subject right now.(Although honestly, I wish more people would be interested in it so it wouldn't be so messy, But thats besides the point)
2nd purpose is to have fun. If you don't have any questions, find something fun to do. You can always learn a bit of magic and try to impress her with that. Sometimes, you just gotta realize that you don't always have to talk, you can just have a comfortable silence. You really gotta know when to recognize it though.
