I don't think mysticism is antithetical to freedom.

Mystics are like cats, no one can make them do anything they don't want to. If you look at the Gnostic sects of Christianity, there were lots of schools of thought about just about every issue under the sun. But they never tried to enforce on singular view of Christianity on everybody else. It was a sort of "live and let live" philosophy, each group had its own teachings and if you didn't agree, you could join a different group or start your own.

The opposite was true of orthodox Christianity. In orthodox Christianity, not believing in the Trinity made you a heretic, and being a heretic in medieval Europe was dangerous. They were hunted down, tortured and killed.

In fact mysticism encourages a few habits that are just as foundational to freedom as logic is. First, it encourages you to see for yourself. Where an established religion will say "Thus says the LORD and you must believe it", Mystical traditions encourage a person to seek God for himself. Second it allows for diversity of opinion. Mystics don't have holy wars because they don't believe in a single path. Zen Buddhists don't call Tibetan Buddhists "heretics", they say it's a different path.

I think the biggest enemy of freedom is established orthodoxy that is never questioned. Once you establish that "Real Americans" believe in X Y and Z, then anyone who dares question these ideas is unAmerican, a political heretic. Once that happens you can no longer debate an issue and come to a conclusion -- even showing up is heresy. That's why religion is such a powerful tool of despots -- it's easy to claim god is on my side, and who wants to be against god? Look at the despots out there now, Amedinejad claims Allah is on his side, Kim Il Jung is pretty much a god to his people, etc. They wrap themselves in religion, but in the kind that makes disagreement a heresy.

Logic is important, but it only works if you're already free and not brainwashed into accepting the wrong premise. Logic won't save you if it includes the premise "hitler was sent to save germany". With that premise, the only logical choices are doing what the nazis say. You'll pay your taxes and be a good little German.
